Would they be ok in your opinion if the government and tax dollars were paying the bills instead of the students?

NO. I am stating basic principles that are used in many countries.

As I said, i see no reason to spar with your wise assery.

There are THREE THINGS that must never be operated for a profit:

(1) health care

(2) prisons

(3) Education.

These correspond exactly to

(1)  Life

(2) Liberty

(3) The Pursuit of Happiness.

They are Business opportunities, Comrade.

IF Communists and the Federal Government would stay out of Education, Communities would have no trouble w/ public school.

IF Communists and Democrat National Socialists would stay out of the courts, our prisons would be small and unprofitable, and Cemeteries would be the profit centers.

IF Communists and the Federal Government stayed out of Health Care, and Providers were able to contract across State Lines like any other business. And if Point of Service charges were instituted, Health Care would be no more expensive for Americans that Automobile ownership.

So, Comrade... it is exactly YOU, and your Communist Federal Government, that is screwing things up.

...and you are whining about it.

Is Oxford University a for-profit school?    Stanford?   Harvard?

No, no, and no.

Each of these receives some funds from the UK or US government for specific projects as specified by legislation.

None is run to make a profit. There are no shareholders that receive compensation from their investment.

So, hide from the argument, Academic Communist Malcontent coward.

So the issue is having shareholders.  Not in how much the service costs.

No, that us not true.

Private non profit universities generally have endowments from money willed to them by successful graduates This money is invested and generally makes a profit for the institution. The provide education to select students, generally for less in tuition than the cost of the education provided. Some students  pay tuition, many very promising students who have no money pay nothing. It is too complicated to explain fully here, as no not would read it, but that is the gist of it.

We should fund the inventions and new drugs with a public institute that pays innovators to develop such things, and pay them a bonus for useful discoveries.

There are really no unsettled problems with socialized medicine. It exists in dozens of countries. And in many countries, people live longer than they do in the US.

But there should be no for-profit drug or equipment makers.  Costa Ricans live longer than Americans.

America spends much more on health care and gets much worse results in almost all areas than the other comparable nations. To have your health care systems run on a for-profit basis results in enormous cruelties and medical bill bankruptcy. A large part of America’s health care spending goes to  non-medical fat cats instead of actual health care. And then there is the drug price ripoff engineered by Republicans in Congress, on top of every other over-priced ripoff for ambulance rides and hospital stays.

U.S. Spends More on Health Care Than Other High-Income Nations But Has Lower Life Expectancy, Worse Health

The U.S. spent more per person on health care than 12 other high-income nations in 2013, while seeing the lowest life expectancy and some of the worst health outcomes among this group, according to a Commonwealth Fund report out today. The analysis shows that in the U.S., which spent an average of $9,086 per person annually, life expectancy was 78.8 years. Switzerland, the second-highest-spending country, spent $6,325 per person and had a life expectancy of 82.9 years. Mortality rates for cancer were among the lowest in the U.S., but rates of chronic conditions, obesity, and infant mortality were higher than those abroad. “Time and again, we see evidence that the amount of money we spend on health care in this country is not gaining us comparable health benefits,” said Commonwealth Fund President David Blumenthal, M.D. “We have to look at the root causes of this disconnect and invest our health care dollars in ways that will allow us to live longer while enjoying better health and greater productivity.” Using data from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and other sources, the report, U.S. Health Care from a Global Perspective: Spending, Use of Services, Prices, and Health in 13 Countries, compares health care spending, use of services, prices, and health outcomes in the U.S. with those in Australia, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Japan, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. Commonwealth Fund researchers found the U.S. to be a substantial outlier when it comes to health spending. Health care consumed 17.1 percent of the nation’s gross domestic product (GDP) in 2013, about 50 percent more than any other country. Despite being the only country in the study without universal health care coverage, government spending on health care in the U.S.—mainly for Medicare and Medicaid—was high as well, at $4,197 per person in 2013. By comparison, the U.K., where all residents are covered by the National Health Service, spent $2,802 per person. Prescription drugs are most expensive in the U.S., with prices twice as high as in the U.K., Australia, and Canada. Prices for health services are considerably higher in the U.S. than elsewhere. On average, heart bypass surgery costs $75,345 in the U.S., compared to $15,742 in the Netherlands, where the procedure is least expensive.

Quit giving money to other nations. Take care of us first.

Unrelated to the topic.

And you do not understand how foreign aid works,

The US replaces older weapons with newer ones.

It cannot sell them to potential enemies. Often, these weapons are like razors and blades.  It so if it gives Colombia  money, it specifies that it is yo purchase used American airplanes. And for the next 20 years, Colombia continues to buy spare parts and upgrades from Boeing or McDonald Douglas.

The US  paid  Raytheon to develop the Iron Dome system for Israel, then loaned money to Israel to pay for it,  then forgave the loan.

No, a bonus is a one shot affair.  Invent a useful device, you get paid  $X. You can choose to receive the bonus all at once or over the years, for tax purposes.

A profit is that every time a device is sold, you and your estate gets paid a share forever. or until a patent runs out. I say the inventor gets paid ONCE and the device or drug passes intro the public domain for use by all.

So who determines the value of my invention?

I would say that there should be a panel of experts consisting of inventors and medical professionals.

This is hypothetical, as you do not have now nor will you ever invent a medical device.
