The number of people stopped from buying guns through the U.S. background check system hit an all-time high of more than 300,000 last year amid a surge of firearm sales, according to new records obtained by the FBI.

The FBI numbers show that background checks blocked nearly twice as many gun sales in 2020 as in the year before.

President Joe Biden stated that he was pleased with the number and promised to push a bill that would strengthen background checks. But the legislation faces an uphill battle getting any Republican support in the Senate. The House in March passed the legislation requiring the checks on all sales and transfers, as well as an expanded 10-day review for gun purchases.

Research found that 16% of would-be gun buyers in 2020 were prohibited by state law, like the extreme-risk protection orders or red-flag laws passed in several states. Another 12% were related to domestic violence, either people subject to a protective order or convicted of a misdemeanor domestic violence crime.

“There’s no question that background checks work, but the system is working overtime to prevent a record number of people with dangerous prohibitors from being able to buy firearms. The loopholes in the law allow people to avoid the system, even if they just meet online or at a gun show for the first time.”

Gun rights groups have pushed back against the new proposals.

Damn, this will stop criminals from buying guns off the street.

The only thing that will stop that is irresponsible gun nutters making their guns easily accessible to

burglars.  That is the number one means of obtaining guns for the criminal class --- stupid rightwingers who do not secure them.

Your are President of the Stupid Rightwingers Assn.

Stopped these guys.

No, it didn't. If they want a gun they can simply purchase it illegally. Are you idiots so stupid you think criminals commit crimes with legally registered guns?

Yes. Because there isn't an illegal gun trade where anyone can obtain a gun for the right price.

What you're too stupid to understand is that there's millions of leftwingers that have guns as well

I have no problem with Democrats enforcing the laws that are already on the books.  We simply don't need more laws, and this proves it.

Correct.  The roots of the illegal gun trade are guns stolen from people who do not secure them.

I think this is the first time you ever spoken truth.

Yes, there are.  I understand just fine.

We have a handgun for protection; we have a rifle or two for hunting.

But we know that an AR15 is a gun for a person that fantasizes about KILLING PEOPLE.

And that is what makes gun nutters garbage.

Cant find the video however a former gang member is saying that the government was bringing guns to the gangs and they were not the kinds of guns that you could get from a dealer because it is not legal for a dealer to sell them.  I have seen a few of the guns pictured on the news after shootings and it is true that they tend to have exotic weapons that hold extra rounds and you could not buy the things at the store. It is also true that these are the jivers that tend to be a lot more dangerous than the said claimed white supreamisist people who step up and get an experimental GMO injection without any questions, etc.

...and your rifles are probably more powerful than an AR15.

But the AR15 LOOKS scary!

How are the background checks DIFFERENT now and how did Biden change them?

I look at this and just shake my head.

The gun banners always scream about how many people are blocked from buying guns.... and the overwhelming majority of those blocked have the blocks overturned on appeal.  Most blocks are mistaken identity blocks based upon common names, not criminal activity.  Some are people who have suffered identity theft, and when denied on a background go through the process to clear their records and are promptly cleared to purchase firearms again.

Criminals can get guns, precisely because they are willing to break the law!  And contrary to the dishonest hyperbole of the gun banners, most guns on the black market do NOT come from thefts of homes where guns were left unsecured.  Many guns used by criminals are "community guns"; i.e. guns criminals pass around amongst their friends and compatriots.  Some are stolen from police and military armories.

But heaven forbid the gun banners allow any kind of fact or truth undermine their efforts to disarm everyone they don't like.

Your delusions are not proper rationalizations for policy.

The AR-15 is a utility weapon, adaptable to many legitimate roles.  I just can't make myself care that it causes you night terrors.

Wait, what? 300,000 is 10% of the US population?  There’s only three million of us?

cons and arithmetic, my Gawd.

there were more than three million Americans in 1776, not even counting slaves.
