So how do people who work at restaurants or in retail but are not homeless make it?

compare the two scenarios... homeless versus existing job/infrastructure. If you already have the apt/car/situation, the cost is not as steep from one month to the next. A lot of them commute in from the suburbs (richmond, antioch, san rafael, vallejo).

So basically make em somebody else's problem.

Why not just raise wages

Raise wages? Easier to round them up and deport them instead of letting them force people to close their stores.

Not if we have Forced Labor Camps  . . .  or GULAGS !

Why don't you just eat a ham sandwich or do some fucking thing instead of pretending you can engage in a discussion

So they are basically one shitty job, one old car or one unexpected expense away from being homeless themselves

Possibly the kids of people that are already earning a living. Their bills are less because they live at home.

Yes. Before you rail against the business owners, average commercial rent in San Francisco county is $93. 51  per square foot per month. That is pricey. Only so many customers can come through the door and if you jack the price per unit sold up too much, they go elsewhere. That leaves for a relatively thin margin hence why you can't just double wages and not have any impacts.

So the homeless problem is caused by a lack of affordable housing.

One of three scenarios. 1. They live at home with the parents. 2. They have a lot of roommates or 3. They pay the exorbitant rent and therefore consume less of other things. Space is limited in SF being as it is a peninsula. Also, they have employment dynamics that most do not. Of wage earners, the top 15% earn roughly 12 to 14 times what the bottom 10% does. Hard to compete with that.

Yes. Not to counter you on every front but SF is a peninsula and therefore space is limited. Very high demand for limited supply of housing. This constraint lessens as you go inland to the east. The restaurant workers compete with those in the information technology sector who earn 4 to 5 times what they do.

Now lets be honest, if you are homeless... very high probability that one drinks, smokes weed, and does other street drugs. Lets suppose that you get one of these jobs at Xyz restaurant. The likelihood that one will stop doing these drugs and therefore not spending the money is very low. It makes it more difficult to be a productive worker if you do these drugs. Can it be done? Yes. So now you have very expensive rent, very high cost of operation of a vehicle, and now add on weed, beer, meth, etc. and your margin shrinks even more.

Sounds like it's an affordable housing problem that is causing the homeless problem

Mostly. except that creating affordable housing in an area where available land is so constrained is nearly impossible. Move them inland and the constraint lessens.

That makes no sense.
I don’t care. You’re situation. Is bizarre and probably illegal.
