Had slavery not existed, there would have been no Civil War.

You are ignorant of history.

In all Spanish colonies, slavery was abolished at the time of independence.

Slavery was illegal in Texas until Texas declared independence from Mexico.

Slavery continued in Cuba and PR until 1886.

It was abolished in Brazil in 1888.

You poor uneducated liberal asshole

FIFY.  The War of Northern Aggression was a truly unfortunate event, but one which the North should be made to pay dearly for.

So, you think that slavery was a terrific part of Southern culture, then?

I think that it happened. There is no way of undoing it.

And yet, it was undone. and rightfully so.

Too bad, Skans really needs someone to polish his vast personal arsenal.

On average, 20% of Southern  families owned slaves, and in SC this was as high as 50%.

Incorrect...it was 3% or (probably) below.

Do you have a link besides Wiki ?

"Abolishing slavery became a major issue towards the end of the war ... "

WRONG.....it became a Political Issue in the North in 1863....but it was the underlying Issue of why the slave states declared War on the North in 1861

At the beginning of the Civil was the North was against the expansion of Slavery to the West... Abolishing Slavery wasn't a major issue yet... During the War the North never once freed any Slaves in the Union...   In fact the former Confederate State of Tenn. which was under Union control at the time was exempt from Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation.  The Proclamation was  a tool for winning the Civil War ... but it did plant the seed to abolish all slavery in the U.S..

...again READ some actual history (if you can read) and for god's sake quit watching cnn or msnbc ...

-------------

Slavery itself was never widespread in the North, though many of the region's businessmen grew rich on the slave trade and investments in southern plantations. Between 1774 and 1804, all of the northern states abolished slavery, but the institution of slavery remained absolutely vital to the South.

I trust Wikipedia.

I know that anyone in the middle class in Gainesville had at least one cook or maid who was a slave. This was in a diary written by a great great great grandmother.

He was a traitor that's for sure. Jefferson Davis should have been hung too. Them and all the other DEMOCRATS that betrayed and attacked their own countrymen.

What could be the possible motive for Wikipedia to be grossly inaccurate about the statistics for slavery prior to the Civil War?

Not true!

You stated flatly that the Northern states had no slaves.

THAT IS NOT TRUE.

IT WASN'T TRUE YESTERDAY.

IT WON'T BE TRUE TOMORROW.

Don't DARE get into a debate with Mirabeau concerning the Confederate States of America unless you are prepared to LOSE each and every time!
