NEW YORK (Reuters) - Democrats in of the House of Representatives will introduce a bill next week to limit the tenure of U.S. Supreme Court justices to 18 years from current lifetime appointments, in a bid to reduce partisan warring over vacancies and preserve the court's legitimacy.

The new bill, seen by Reuters, would allow every president to nominate two justices per four-year term and comes amid heightened political tensions as Republican President Donald Trump prepares to announce his third pick for the Supreme Court after the death on Sept. 18 of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, with just 40 days to go until the Nov. 3 election.

"It would save the country a lot of agony and help lower the temperature over fights for the court that go to the fault lines of cultural issues and is one of the primary things tearing at our social fabric," said California U.S. Representative Ro Khanna, who plans to introduce the legislation on Tuesday, along with Representatives Joe Kennedy III of Massachusetts.

Partly due to rising life expectancies, justices serve increasingly long tenures, on average now more than 25 years.

Trump is stacking the deck with cons so that if he loses this election, he will bring it to SCOTUS, and they will award it to Trump. Bush/Gore revisited. There is precedent.

Trump says he would accept Supreme Court election ruling after declining to commit to peaceful transfer

THAT is written into the Constitution.... YOU will need more than just a Democrat House bill to get THAT accomplished !!

Michael Bloomberg is the one trying to BUY the votes of CONVICTS in Florida !!  and Democrats are the ones trying to illegally influence the process for replacing a justice on the Supreme Court !!  Trump is going by the Book ( the Constitution )... which says that a sitting President can nominate new Justices, and the Senate can advise and consent in their appointment... and since Republicans hold both the Presidency and the Senate... the ods are that President Trump will prevaisl... LEGALLY !

But, BUYING Convicts in Florida, with HUNDREDS of MILLIONS of dollars?  THAT is just ONE indication of how FAR Democrats have fallen !!

THEY are no longer WORTHY of the American peoples TRUST, or SUPPORT !!

And once again we see a perfectly good idea being totally dismissed simply because it's coming from the opposing team... and no consideration whatsoever of its merits.

Yep, America is fucked.

In your opinion.  I happen to think it's a stupid ass idea arrived at by idiots.

Doesn't matter...Article III, Section 1 states (in part...emphasis mine);

"The judges, both of the supreme and inferior courts, shall hold their offices during good behaviour,..."

https://www.law.cornell.edu/constitution/articleiii

Notice is doesn't say "...during good behaviour for a eighteen years..."

There is a Senior Judge classification that a judge can CHOOSE to take if they meet certain requirements.  If demonrats want to FORCE them to do so, they need to amend the Constitution.

So, according to what you and Nancy want, the President will have at least TWO justices in their pocket to do their bidding.

BTW, RBG and any more like her, would only be able to serve 18 years too, NO LONGER for liberal Justices either.

Why is it a stupid idea?

It seems to me that it would do a lot to prevent the SC from ever falling out of sync with the popular sentiment of the time.

Appeal to tradition is a logical fallacy.

Thanks for revealing your traitorous, seditious desire to turn the SC into another branch of the legislature.

It's not their job to be in sync with the popular sentiment of the time, you idiot. it's their job to interpret the Constitution as it relates to the law.

This idiot thinks citing the Constitution is an appeal to tradition.

Literally fucking laughing out loud.

Citing it isn't.

Pretending it's akin to the sacred word of God is pretty fucking stupid.

The GOP is installing reactionaries whose values and prejudices bias those interpretations.

It isn't the general public's job to sheepishly comply with a fucking right-wing takeover.
