Having a great conversation with a black co-worker.

I basically said the main problem in our society is lack of respect and tolerance for opposing views.

It appeared we were making progress on racism in this country but how much of it was real progress and how much of it was swept under the rug because people are afraid to share their thoughts and beliefs?

We’ve created an environment of intolerance and lack of respect for citizens to think and believe however they see fit.

It seems to me,that if you disagree with blacks on ANYTHING it's viewed as racism.

Not really in person. I’ve always worked with a large population of blacks and well liked because I treat everyone the same. My nickname as a general manager with about a 40% black employee rate was L-dawg. 😆

I have conversations about race all the time. Good, deep, honest conversations.

Older blacks typically can see a large change from 50 years ago but still room to grow.

Younger blacks act like they’re still enslaved and dealing with daily oppression and mistreatment.

Interesting perspectives.

I grew up in married student housing in Berkeley California from 70-74. I grew up around mixed racial couples skin color just wasn’t something I ever focused on.

I see people, not skin color.

absolute bullshit what you say here sir. Every person should be rightly appalled by what has transgressed over all these years.

What an ignorant statement! Grow the F up!

People are appalled.

Just not for the same reason. Blacks aren't babies. I don't know why you treat them as babies.

Kinda like how black folk felt and behaved around white folk for centuries.

Kinda like you need to take some logic and critical thinking courses.

You know why an eye for an eye isn't a valid school of ethics?

Because doing the same thing to someone they did to you justifies their action.

You can't fight intolerance with intolerance or racism with racism.

My father was a criminal civil rights attorney for the DOJ for 10 years.  He missed some holidays...let's just say that.  Trust me, there is no "race."  There are just people.  When your dad brings home a blood soaked oak riot baton when you're 13, that two white deputies used to beat a 78 year old black man to death, while he was handcuffed to his cell bars, in a Birmingham jail, you learn that people are the horrors.  Not the race.  We assign the horrors of our species to races because we cannot face the horror of ourselves.  Ask me about the origin of the word "race."  Then ask me about the genetic diversity between races.  I won't lie to you.

What’s transgressed? Police didn’t kill blacks under Obama? 😆 You need a dose of reality.

One of my best friends in the world is a guy I played football with in college, and we hit it off right away when we met.  Interesting in that we're both people who tend to be polite but stand-offish with strangers; but somehow he and I met and were immediately comfortable with each other.  The fact that I was white and he was black never mattered; we even both expressed amazement more than once that we could hang out and freely talk about ANYTHING - including racial issues - in complete comfort, and we learned a LOT from each other over the years.

He personally thinks race is a nonsense subject that would be better addressed by turning our backs on it.  STOP letting it tear us apart and just treat each other respectfully, as people and not as being somehow "different".  I think about how I love this guy like a brother and we've got 30 years of close friendship behind us, and realize there are people out there who would treat him with disrespect and contempt simply because of the color of his skin and it offends me to my core that in a nation where one of the founding principles is "All Men Are Created Equal" a good man like him should ever be treated without respect.

I don't know how to fix it; except to continue to treat people - ALL people - with respect and courtesy until they prove via their actions they are undeserving of such.
