Recommended Posts

The Trump Campaign admits it.

Conservatives] are losing faith that they can win elections in the future. With this come dark possibilities…When a group that has traditionally exercised power comes to believe that its eclipse is inevitable, and that the destruction of all it holds dear will follow, it will fight to preserve what it has—whatever the cost.

We’ve already seen that Trump has been willing to:

  1. At minimum, welcome Russian interference in the 2016 election,
  2. Extort Ukraine to interfere in the 2020 election,
  3. Publicly state that he would be willing to take information from a foreign government that damaged his opponent, and
  4. Smear his most likely opponent in 2020, Joe Biden.

Trump is no aberration. He is the culmination of Republican corruption that began decades ago.

The corruption I mean has less to do with individual perfidy than institutional depravity. It isn’t an occasional failure to uphold norms, but a consistent repudiation of them. It isn’t about dirty money so much as the pursuit and abuse of power—power as an end in itself, justifying almost any means. Political corruption usually trails financial scandals in its wake—the foam is scummy with self-dealing—but it’s far more dangerous than graft. There are legal remedies for Duncan Hunter, a representative from California, who will stand trial next year for using campaign funds to pay for family luxuries.* But there’s no obvious remedy for what the state legislatures of Wisconsin and Michigan, following the example of North Carolina in 2016, are now doing.

The corruption of the Republican Party in the Trump era seemed to set in with breathtaking speed. In fact, it took more than a half century to reach the point where faced with a choice between democracy and power, the party chose the latter. Its leaders don’t see a dilemma—democratic principles turn out to be disposable tools, sometimes useful, sometimes inconvenient. The higher cause is conservatism, but the highest is power. After Wisconsin Democrats swept statewide offices last month, Robin Vos, speaker of the assembly, explained why Republicans would have to get rid of the old rules: “We are going to have a very liberal governor who is going to enact policies that are in direct contrast to what many of us believe in.”

I think they know exactly what they're doing regarding weakening our constitution and have weighed one against the other and have decided staying in power is paramount. These people should be considered traders to the country and voted out in 2020.

I agree. The party became Trumps almost immediately once he was elected. And the party got what they wanted for the most part, at least in the short-term. The Republican party has divided this country for far too long.

It seems like the major majority is caught up right now in too much fear that Trump will be elected to four more years. But that cannot be the case.

We need strong turn-out for whomever wins the Democratic Primary. There can be no holding back this time. Too many issues depend on change - the next supreme court nominee is a big issue at this point in time.

Warren is smart as a whip, and I believe she can bring people together, and I know she is a fighter! But I am committed to whomever gets the nod.

Peace!
