Why Aren't All Our Cowardly, Hysterical Conservatives Demanding Closure of All U.S. Airports Over Deadly Incoming Coronavirus, Just Like They Did Over The Ebola Outbreak?

Now, as a REAL AIRBORNE DEADLY VIRUS is plaguing China, and as the first handful of Coronavirus victim-carriers have arrived here in the States

Some people are just plain stupid like the author of the OP.

Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses whose effects range from causing the common cold to triggering much more serious diseases, such as severe acute respiratory syndrome, or SARS.

It's been here for years. Change your pants, the pee stench is a little over the top.

Each year in the United States, more than 250,000 people have to seek care in a hospital due to pneumonia. Unfortunately, about 50,000 people die from the disease each year in the United States.

I'm frankly surprised at the lack of interest in this topic at LF.   TDS seems to have enthralled virtually everyone even though we all know Trump isn't going to be convicted by the Senate and he's going to win in 2020.   No interest in this story, yet right now the virus  (if you believe the numbers coming out of China) is killing about 3-4% of those who catch it ... and it's already being reported world wide (containment in China has failed).   France just diagnosed 2 infected people.   This virus is potentially very dangerous.   It's airborne but also can be spread by touch.   It has an incubation period of up to 2 weeks.    It has to be distinguished from the flu or a cold perhaps delaying treatment.   There's no vaccine.   And it's already mutating.

And in case you still don’t think this is serious, there’s this news today …

https://finance.yahoo.com/news/china-rushes-build-hospital-virus-within-10-days-074150904.html

Beijing (AFP) - China is rushing to build a new hospital in a staggering 10 days to treat patients at the epicentre of a deadly virus outbreak that has stricken hundreds of people, state media reported Friday.

The facility in the central city of Wuhan is expected to be in use by February 3 to serve a rising number of patients infected by a coronavirus that has left at least 26 people dead and millions on lockdown in an effort to curb its spread.

Dozens of excavators and trucks were filmed working on the site by state broadcaster CCTV.

The hospital will have a capacity of 1,000 beds spread over 25,000 square metres (270,000 square feet), the official Xinhua news agency said.

And according to the article there are now EIGHT Chinese cities that have travel restrictions and have canceled public events.

Also, 40 military doctors have been brought in to help the Wuhan Pulmonary Hospital.

Either this is a government that cares or one that is terrified.

Here’s a good site to track the spread …

Is it just a coincidence that the new coronavirus first appeared in Wuhan?

Or is this virus something that the Chinese created or were trying to weaponize in this lab ... and it escaped?

Correction … make that 14 Chinese cities on lockdown now.

Authorities today scrambled to shut tourist attractions and public transport systems in 14 cities in a bid to stop the spread of the deadly new coronavirus that has killed at least 26 people.

In a drastic turn of events, part of the Great Wall of China and Disneyland in Shanghai were closed today as authorities desperately try to stop people spreading the Wuhan coronavirus.

Thirteen cities, home to around 40million people, are reported to have followed Wuhan's example and gone into some form of lockdown in the past 24 hours with public transport halted and roads closed.

A report published today warned China's deadly new virus could have infected 350,000 people in a single city by the end of the month, according to experts who warn doctors are only diagnosing one in every 20 cases.

Scientists now say thousands of people might catch the virus without ever knowing they have had it, making it far easier to spread than was initially feared.

… snip …

A report produced by researchers from Lancaster University in England, the University of Florida and the University of Glasgow, estimated that only one in 20 coronavirus cases are being diagnosed.

Dr Jonathan Read, a biostatistics researcher at Lancaster, wrote with colleagues: 'If no change in control or transmission happens, then we expect further outbreaks to occur in other Chinese cities, and that infections will continue to be exported to international destinations at an increasing rate.

'In 14 days’ time (4 February 2020), our model predicts the number of infected people in Wuhan to be greater than 250 thousand (prediction interval, 164,602 to 351,396).'

Dr Read told MailOnline: 'The estimate we came back with was that one in 20 people becoming infected are getting detected and confirmed as cases. There is potentially a lot of people not recognised.

'This could be for a number of reasons. One that springs to mind the most, common with respiratory and flu-like viruses, is a lot of people will get sick and never seek medical help. Unless you present yourself to a doctor or a hospital you won’t get counted.'

Professor Neil Ferguson, from Imperial College London, said: 'It's winter – it’s an enormous city with lots of people with cold and flu. People would realise they were feeling ill, but not that they have the coronavirus.'

And Professor Paul Hunter, from the University of East Anglia, added: 'If it's [the virus] relatively mild, there is potential it has been spread in people that aren’t ill.

'Any infection can range from making people really sick and then causing mild flu-like symptom. We can miss a lot of the mild cases.'

Businesses around China – the world's biggest nation and home to more than one billion people, a seventh of the world's population – are already having to take drastic measures.

Seven movies which were set to premiere over this weekend have cancelled their screenings and 70,000 cinemas across the country have closed their doors, The Telegraph reports.

McDonald's is believed to have ordered the closure of branches in five cities in the Hubei province, and clothing store Uni Qlo has shut down 17 stores in Wuhan city, where the outbreak began and is most dangerous.

Wuhan has now been in lockdown for two days, with residents told not to leave and forced to wear face masks. There is no public transport, major roads have been closed and the airport has been shut down.

Reports from the city described it as a 'ghost town' as streets were deserted at a time when millions would normally be preparing to celebrate.

Read the rest of that article and go look at the many videos and photos.

Sounds and looks like China is in the process of shutting down.

Will the US be next?

Now, note that the R0 number is the number of people who are likely to be infected by an infected person.

The BBC reports that the RO number of this virus is between 1.4 - 2.5.

And that's assuming that the Chinese are telling the world the truth right now about it's spread in China.

Now as a point of reference, the median R0 value for seasonal influenza (flu) is 1.28 (1.19-1.37).

Note that R0 for the 1918-1919 Spanish Flu is estimated to have ranged from 1.4 – 2.8, with a mean of 2.

So this appears to be just as contagious as Spanish Flu (again, assuming the Chinese are being honest in reporting the numbers).

Fortunately, the current estimated fatality rate if you catch it is about a third to a sixth that of the Spanish Flu (assuming the Chinese are being honest).

But the current estimate fatality rate is still 3 times that of ordinary flu.

So this could quickly get out of control and be quite deadly.

Why is that crackpot, sixteen?

It's quite a coincidence that the first case shows up near the only Level 4 lab in China ... one that it was announced would be experimenting with viruses.

A 2017 article in Nature (https://www.nature.com/news/inside-the-chinese-lab-poised-to-study-world-s-most-dangerous-pathogens-1.21487 ) quotes Richard Ebright, a molecular biologist at Rutgers University, saying that  "The SARS virus has escaped from high-level containment facilities in Beijing multiple times."   He goes on to suggest that China's announced interest in building multiple Level 4 labs is a sign that they are developing bioweapons to be competitive with the other major powers.  He says “These facilities are inherently dual use" and notes that prospect of ramping up opportunities to inject monkeys with pathogens is worrying because “They can run, they can scratch, they can bite.”

AND it's widely believed that Chinese has a large bioweapon program.   Their genome editing work is pushing the envelope on what's ethical and safe.   When James Clapper appeared before Congress in January 2016 he warned that such research  increases the risk of the creation of potentially harmful biological agents or products.”  You can't honestly believe the Chinese military has no hand in this, when the military has a hand in every other sector of the economy and technology development.  In fact, China's literature shows China is seeking dominance in this area.   For example (https://www.defenseone.com/ideas/2019/08/chinas-military-pursuing-biotech/159167/ ) here are statements and writings from PLA connected Chinese that prove it ...

In 2010’s War for Biological Dominance (制生权战争), Guo Jiwei (郭继卫), a professor with the Third Military Medical University, emphasizes the impact of biology on future warfare.

In 2015, then-president of the Academy of Military Medical Sciences He Fuchu (贺福初) argued that biotechnology will become the new “strategic commanding heights” of national defense, from biomaterials to “brain control” weapons. Maj. Gen. He has since become the vice president of the Academy of Military Sciences, which leads China’s military science enterprise.

Biology is among seven “new domains of warfare” discussed in a 2017 book by Zhang Shibo (张仕波), a retired general and former president of the National Defense University, who concludes: “Modern biotechnology development is gradually showing strong signs characteristic of an offensive capability,” including the possibility that “specific ethnic genetic attacks” (特定种族基因攻击) could be employed.

The 2017 edition of Science of Military Strategy (战略学), a textbook published by the PLA’s National Defense University that is considered to be relatively authoritative, debuted a section about biology as a domain of military struggle, similarly mentioning the potential for new kinds of biological warfare to include “specific ethnic genetic attacks.”

Why would you just assume this "novel" (that's what they called it) virus came from snakes ... or is it bats (the story seems to be changing)?

Are you just as naive as you were when you were 16 years old?

According to the CDC the virus started in the middle East.

Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV) was first reported in 2012 in Saudi Arabia and has since caused illness in people in more than 25 other countries, including the United States.

MERS Coronavirus

Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV) was first reported in 2012 in Saudi Arabia and has since caused illness in people in more than 25 other countries, including the United States. Most people reported to have MERS-CoV infection developed severe acute respiratory illness, including fever, cough, and shortness of breath.

Only two patients in the U.S. have ever tested positive for MERS-CoV infection—both in May 2014. CDC continues to closely monitor the situation. More about MERS in the U.S.

Sorry TROLL, but this virus did not come from Saudi Arabia.

It is not the same virus.

Here's what WHO reports ...

Novel Coronavirus – China

12 January 2020

… snip …

The cluster was initially reported on 31 December 2019, when the WHO China Country Office was informed. The Chinese authorities identified a new type of coronavirus (novel coronavirus, nCoV), which was isolated on 7 January 2020.

Laboratory testing was conducted on all suspected cases identified through active case finding and retrospective review. Other respiratory pathogens such as influenza, avian influenza, adenovirus, Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV), Middle East Respiratory Syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) were ruled out as the cause.
