California would raise taxes on Corporations with large CEO-to-worker Pay Gaps

Recommended Posts

This is great to see!  I encourage more of the same.  There is no need for such an extreme wage disparity.

Quote
A bill to raise taxes on corporations with large gaps between CEO and worker pay moved forward in the California state senate Wednesday after a hearing that drew sharp lines between labor and anti-poverty supporters rate and Wall Street opponents.

The California proposal is similar to legislation introduced in the U.S. Congress last November by Senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, Representatives Barbara Lee and Rashida Tlaib, and 18 other House members.

Under the California bill (SB 37), the wider a company’s gap between CEO and median worker pay, the higher their state corporate tax rate. An estimated 2,000 corporations with annual profits in the state of $10 million or would be subject to the tax, with revenue projected at as much as $4 billion per year.

that is  fascist

Anti Free  market.

You don't like how much the  boss gets paid?    Go find a new  job.

This is  why  liberalism fails and is a mental disorder.

It is fascist for a CEO to make $40 million and to have his workers get a 3 cent raise.  The growing wage disparity in this country is crippling the working class.  If companies don't have the integrity to pay their workers a decent wage, then they will be taxed at a higher rate (to compensate for all the programs these people will have to apply for due to their lack of income).   Why take this money out of our tax dollars?   Let the big corporations pay for their sub-par treatment of workers!

There is nothing "fascist" about this proposal. That appears to be a randomly selected word with a negative connotation.

A better plan for this would be laws that require board membership by labor, ala Germany's rules.  Let's grow up already.  This model of allowing a few people to own everything and control everything is obviously untenable, the source of endless pain and suffering through the ages.

Raising taxes on such corporations to me seems like a rat's nest.  The loop holes will start to pop up, the lawyers will turn it into indecipherable gobbledy-gook in short order.  Put the forces into place in the market, by way of labor representatives on the boards, and let them solve these problems.

You have  no idea what fascism is.    A CEO can't  be fascist.   Fascism is government authoritarianism

This is what is wrong in America,   people  use words and terms they don't  know anything about.\

What an incentive for businesses to come to (or stay in) California!

Seems as if it might be a bit counter-productive.

Nothing new under the sun here. Typical socialist-like proposals limiting freedom. Government thinking they know better. Quite old, frankly.

That's why you're an idiot.  You misinterpret my words, then attack me on your skewed perception.

The government is fascist when it allows CEO's to take all the money and give the plebes only a small pittance.

Yeah man that is why the corporate and highest earner tax rate was 94% in the 50s

The most prosperous time in our countries history.

So the statement that raising tax rates on corporations and high earners is anti free market is one of the most ignorant arguments I've ever heard

The net worth of Jeff Bezos is 156 Billion.

How of his money do you want?

And how much in taxes should he pay?  Percentage wise.

you should pay your fair share about 21-30 million dollars a year

But as many companies and corporations do they find loopholes and pay 0 dollars in taxes.

He should pay 40% on his annual earnings, plus a 2% tax on his net worth over $50 billion.

I don't want any of his money.  I want the additional money to go to those who are ill and can't pay for their healthcare, those who are being threatened with foreclosure/eviction, and those who cannot afford to pay their bills due to low wages.  People are hurting out there and all the money is going to the wealthy.

So the California legislature...in their infinite wisdom...wants large corporations to reduce the amount of business they do in California.  If I run a well established business in CA, I move our corporate offices and all warehouses out of the state, shutter ever retail outlet and prohibit any salesperson from visiting customers in CA.  An established company can simply rely on online sales.  That would eliminate our nexus in the state and I wouldn't have to pay state taxes.

yes but think about it for a second.

California has the highest taxes in the union but still many companies still keep there corporate offices and innovation centers in silicon valley.

How does this make sense??

Wrong...   I use your words and show that you  have  no idea what fascism is.

You  don't even  know that Obama was the  most fascist president since FDR and  Trump is the least fascist president.
