As Trump goes on trial, a fight over witnesses remains unresolved

Recommended Posts

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Donald Trump goes on trial in the U.S. Senate this week on charges he abused his office and obstructed Congress, with one of the most contentious questions still unresolved - should senators hear from witnesses?

Senate Democrats in the Republican-controlled chamber want four current and former Trump administration officials to testify. Democrats need at least four Republicans to join them to reach a majority of 51 senators to approve the subpoenas.

Schumer ready to 'force votes for witnesses'

Senate Democrats were ramping up pressure for witnesses to be called in the impeachment trial of Donald Trump before the historic process gets fully under way on Capitol Hill on Tuesday – even as the president plans to be away at the elite economic and political forum in Davos, Switzerland, during opening arguments.

The Senate minority leader, Chuck Schumer, said that he aims to compel the chamber as early as Tuesday to hold a vote on whether witnesses and extra evidence can be brought before the impeachment trial, and he turned up the pressure on moderate Republicans to side with the minority to achieve that.

Problem is, McConnell controls what matters come up for a vote in the Senate...not Scumer.  Since the Senate has already started the trial process, they cannot take up any other business.  His only hope is to write up a motion and send it to the clerk in the Senate.  The motion will be read and voted on without debate (per Senate impeachment trial rules).

GOP Senators will eventually vote to have witnesses.
