Lawyer for Democrats makes a case for impeaching Trump on abuse of power, obstruction

Recommended Posts

A lawyer for Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee offered a summary of the case for impeaching President Trump on Monday, saying the president abused his power when he pressured Ukraine to investigate political rivals and obstructed the probe by blocking testimony from key officials.

The statement from Barry H. Berke came early in a crucial hearing at which lawyers for both Democrats and Republicans are making cases for and against impeachment. Later Monday, the panel will hear evidence from lawyers for the House Intelligence Committee — Daniel S. Goldman for the Democrats and Stephen R. Castor for the Republicans — which spent two weeks holding public hearings.

“It is clear that the goal was not the investigations themselves, but the political benefit that President Trump would enjoy from an announcement of investigations into his 2020 political rival and against a unanimous assessment that showed that he received foreign support in the 2016 election.”

Democrat says Trump violated oath

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The head of a U.S. congressional panel leading the impeachment inquiry against Donald Trump on Monday accused the Republican president of putting himself before his country and violating his oath of office.

In a statement kicking off a hearing in the U.S. House of Representatives to weigh the evidence against Trump, Judiciary Committee Democratic Chairman Jerrold Nadler said there was extensive proof of wrongdoing.

“The evidence shows that Donald J. Trump, the president of the United States, has put himself before his country. He has violated his most basic responsibilities to the people. He has broken his oath,” Nadler said. “I will honor mine.”

bump bump bump .....

the evidence will be presented in the "courtroom" ............

So far, there is no evidence other than Trump denying he wanted a quid pro quo.

Republicans got every single witness to admit it was speculation on their part and all testimony was hearsay.

Think of impeachment like a grand jury where anything can be used to indict. Doesn't mean any of it would actually be allowed in a trial.
