What might be THE REAL REASONS Russia SOLD Alaska to the US for a handful of peanuts ?

Recommended Posts

It just can't be because the Russians were broke and needed the 7.2 million or else they'd starve !

NO ONE  in his right mind would do such an idiotic thing.

SO, WHY DID THEY ?

Anyone's guess ?

I going to go with the idea that the Tsar was not in his right mind to sell off a large chunk of land for a one time payment of money.  He would not be the only one who did not understand the concept of diminishing returns; the native Hawaiians had the same problems.

There were not many Russians in Alaska prior to the sale. It was not properly colonized, only used for fur trapping.

The Russians perceived that US expansion would result in the US taking Alaska anyway, possibly by force. The US had expanded into Oregon, and taken Texas and California.

They also wanted to limit British power by having the US surround British Columbia, although that's kind of a lame reason.

It was still an incredible bargain.
