My guess is that they get in shape in order to avoid medical expenses and brag to each other about how they can run x miles, be at the gym for x hours, etc. I go to the gym for strengthen my back and to enable me to stay active with my kids. Its a way of staying young and being able to actively play/explore with my kids. I like being the dad that takes my kids to far flung and remote destinations and still has the energy to keep up with them.

Kids - are exercise equipment.

Ha!

These are great shoes.

My grandfather lived to 102. While I have no scientific evidence to back this up, in my opinion he did so in part due to being to physically active every day. Not just walking or playing golf. He maintained an orchard, garden, and a hay field up until his mid-90's.

I'm 5'4" and about 150 or so. Did a 600 mile bike ride through the desert of Eastern Oregon in July 5 years ago. Not too bad for someone in their late 30's at the time.

Harry Truman (1884-1972)  was a common sight after his terms as president, as he took his daily "constitutional" - a walk of an hour or so around Independence, MO.

He was on the local news pretty often as he was willing to give his opinion of daily events to reporters who were his friends. He lived to be 88.

Teddy Roosevelt - was a President that bent the sh!t out of life.

He boxed, hiked, and hunted.

...As did most of the Founders.
