These Are the Best Guitarists of All-time, Ranked. Do You Agree?

1. Jimi Hendrix

1. Jimi Hendrix
We’ve arrived at our No. 1 guitar player of all time, and this man, Jimi Hendrix, tops all lists of greatest guitar players ever. Hendrix was born in Seattle, Washington on Nov. 27, 1942. One thing to note is the fact that Hendrix is hands down the god of the guitar, and had the shortest career of anyone else on this list.

His sound was out of this world, as the first to perfect feedback, and he produced combinations of notes and chords never heard before.

He’s best known for songs such as “Purple Haze,” “Foxy Lady” and his rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

Hendrix is the best.

My personal favorite is Brian May from Queen but he is not the best of all time.

Hendrix at #1 is an easy call. Well deserved.

But Jerry Garcia being down at #40 is absurd.

Duane Allman was also better than Eric Clapton. His duo with Clapton on Layla proves the point.

No. Where is Roy Clark on that list?

These guys are/were great rock guitarists...but they are far from the best guitarists of all time.

You have to go to a different genre of music to find the greatest guitarists...such as Al Di Meola, Django Reinhardt, etc.

"Jazz guitarist Frank Vignola claims that nearly every major popular-music guitarist in the world has been influenced by Reinhardt."

The OP might be referring to only "rock guitarist" 😉

Roy Clark played guitar, banjo, fiddle, harmonica, trumpet, trombone, drums as well as other instruments. Jimi was one dimensional.

With that said,  I think both Roy Clark and Glen Campbell were better than Jimi.

Yes...the OP should have specified "rock guitarists".

The world's greatest guitarists usually come from jazz or other genres, not rock.

Did you know that Brian May used a coin instead of a traditional guitar pick?

"Queen's Brian May uses the old British currency sixpence coin as his guitar pick. The coin May uses only had silver in it until the 1940's and they were removed from circulation in the 1980's. May chose to use the sixpence as a pick because he found plastic picks too flexible."

A coin pick also changes the sound of a guitar. May had a unique sound.

He has been surpassed.  I would  say  he is the Most  Important Of All Time...  but no longer the  best, because  he  influenced all  who  heard him.

Who is  better?

Prince

Joe Bonamassa

Mark Knopfler

John Fruisciante

Steve Stevens

 add to the list

Django Reinhardt had a disabled hand and played with two fingers.

He created many jazz innovations with chords and lead lines that changed a lot of what jazz guitarists use today.

And he did it all with only two fingers...he influenced many guitarists, including pop guitarist that came after him.

None of those even come close to Lars Lannerbäck.  His fingers moved faster than slick lightning.

For Rock Guitarists, my top 5 would be

1. Jimi Hendrix - gets points for originality, but not technically brilliant as a guitarist

2. Duane Allman - come on, I've got even him beat with Ted Nugen!

3. Joe Bonnamassa - don't know him.

4. Kurt Hammett - he's whatever.

5. Jeff Beck - good guitarist, but not the best.

Honorable Mention

1, Kim Thayil - totally sucks!

2. Jimmy Page - sucks.

None of your picks come close to Lars Lannerbäck, when he was in his prime.  (fake name: Yngwie Malmsteen).  Maybe Slideman's pick, Segovia, could give him a run for his money.

Pure technical skill does not always translate into a product that is pleasing to the ears. Besides, music is subjective.

I think your politics are bleeding into this. I am not a great guitarist and have learned some Ted Nugent songs within an hour. Not nearly as fast or complex as those constructed by Kurt Hammett or John Petrucci (Dream Theater)

I agree that the ones I have hear that are mentioned are great musicians, each one in his own way.

I see no reason to want to RANK them.

It is ART and TALENT which are unique to every artist.

Yeah, you can easily rank footracers, javelin throwers and caber tossers. But musicians? NO WAY!

As Charles Mingus said the genius is the guy who is best at being himself.

I was just going to say that

Al Di Meola, Django Reinhardt,Roy clark, Tommy Emmanuel, John Mclaughlin, Muddy waters just to name a few

Jimi Hendrix no doubt is the best Rock Guitarist period, but not the best guitarist.

That's the fact.  That's why somebody with killer chops can become utterly boring after 5 minutes, while somebody who may technically be barely competent is riveting.

No holds barred chat

    Liberals are going to hell.

  • grgle

  • Where’s at @slideman?

  • Hola

  • I know this one, this new chat thing. I've seen it called the "shoutbox" among other things in my past. Very hard to hide from the chat box. The question is asked, there's no time to go search what other folks think, this is real time. Only seconds should be between chat box replies. This one is made for me. In the chat box one has to be quick on their feet with stuff at the ready. This chat box is the worst nightmare of anyone trying to deal with ol' teach.

hey @teacher that sounds like too much work for me LOL I need that useless thing called *time* in order to authenticate facts and truths which get posted by deceitful Dems

Scroll the other way for a while and you'll see me saying that these days the chat box ain't gonna work as one has to be quick on one's feet. The question is posed, there ain't no stinkin time for ya'll to refer to your betters for the answer, ya'll don't understand these things, this political debate, ya'll don't have the answer at hand, ya'll haven't thought this through, ya'll ain't ready for the next question I'll ask,  ya'll can't handle the pace that a bloke such as I can bring it in the chat box, ya'll can't handle this format.

This one is made for me.
