This is how Maine does immigration - and I couldn't be more proud of my state!

Recommended Posts

After watching the sheer cruelty and human rights violations that are happening on the southern border, I am filled with pride with the way MY state is handing an influx of refugees from central Africa.  Instead of a bunch of MAGA-hatted nutjobs threatening them and calling for their deportation, people in my area are clearing out their closets, pantries, and coat rooms and donating to our new neighbors who have come a long way and seek only peace, safety, and community.  Of course there is some opposition - but it is in the distinct minority here (and shrinking).

PORTLAND, Maine — When Jean Garcia Mabaka Yangu bent over Friday to pick up his 1-year-old, his T-shirt stretched and lifted to expose a jagged foot-long scar on his abdomen.

It was inflicted, he said, by the knife of a soldier in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the country he fled with his four children. That began a harrowing, months-long journey to South America, through Mexico to Texas, and finally to this historically welcoming city in northern New England.

But for now, Mabaka Yangu felt safe, cradling his baby outside a Portland sports arena where 228 asylum seekers are being sheltered as the city scrambles to cope with an unprecedented surge of new arrivals, many of them Africans from the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Angola.

Then came the outpouring of support  :) :

PORTLAND, Maine —

The United Way of Greater Portland says more than 1,200 people have applied to volunteer and help asylum-seekers.

People wishing to help the asylum seekers can text EXPO to 91999 or visit a website the city created for donations. So far more than $200,000 has been raised.

AUGUSTA — The Maine House voted Wednesday afternoon to relax Maine’s welfare policies to allow asylum seekers and other legally present non-citizens to qualify for General Assistance, food stamps and other assistance programs.

But tensions rose on the House floor with one member being escorted from the chamber before the 88-51 vote divided largely along partisan lines with Democrats in favor and Republicans opposed.

PORTLAND, Maine —

Asylum-seekers staying at the emergency shelter at the Portland Expo received legal help on the complicated immigration process.

Lawyers said it is important that families seeking asylum understand the process thoroughly.

The asylum-seekers have a year from the date of their arrival in the United States to file for asylum.

The Immigration Legal Advocacy Project is helping them get the process started.

You deserve to be proud RR. That is how good and decent people behave.

It stands in sharp contrast to the behavior of the current administration and the MAGA crowd. Trump and his cult disgraces us with their cruelty towards refugees and immigrants.

Lots of good people in Maine.  I'm guessing Maine is not about to become an outpost of the Bible Belt.:).

we keep getting bluer and bluer.... thank God....

Our senator, Susan Collins, who is pretty much a RINO, is now the ONLY Republican member of Congress from All of New England!

And the esteemed Speaker of the Maine House of Representatives - and MY rep here in Freeport - Sara Gideon - just announced she will be running against Collins in 2020!

Susan is toast.  :D  Sara Gideon is going to be our next senator.

I hope so... I sent her a big donation today as soon as I read about her candidacy.

The wife and I are going to donate this weekend.  She should win District 1 easily - it's District 2 that I'm worried about.  The north of Augusta crowd is a lot more conservative.  They like Collins; she's from Aroostook County.

We got the numbers down this way, though.  :D

Donations for our new residents is now above $500,000, thanks to hundreds of generous, welcoming Mainers as well as a hefty donation from Maine resident Stephen King and his wife, Tabitha:

PORTLAND, Maine —

Stephen King, Tabitha King and others have donated to a fund for asylum seekers in Maine, pushing the total available to more than half a million dollars.

Portland spokeswoman Jessica Grondin said Tuesday that city administrators received a check for $40,000 from the Stephen and Tabitha King Foundation Monday.

The donations go to the Community Support Fund, which is set up to help hundreds of asylum seekers who have arrived in Portland in recent weeks.

Grondin said Portland also received a $22,000 donation from the Karina Foundation, a Massachusetts-based charity, putting their fund over $500,000.

That's already about half the amount of money needed to assist these newcomers for an entire year.  :D  I love my state of Maine!

What about Jordan? A benevolent King / a small Arab Kingdom. All the turmoil.

And we are talking about humanitarian aid for those who are coming north from places we helped to make horrid.

It's more than a whale of a problem / when people like Trump treat innocent children like criminals.
