The Wall

Recommended Posts

Very funny,  but he makes an important point. A wall might be a impediment to smuggling drugs and people but if you think its a solution look no further than 'ports of entry' where most drugs enter America, there packed with officers, dogs and technology and still it gets through. Remember a 'port of entry' is a wall and a big one at that! The southern border is largely bereft of such facilities. Trump may think he can dance with world leaders but can he really outfox the ingenuity of the cartels. The 'war on drugs' and illegal immigration has never achieved its goals with one modern excemption, the Berlin wall'. something Americans vehemently opposed at the time and went to great lengths to undermine

A wall would just be an escalation of the war on drugs,    Since 1971, when Nixon declared his drug war, the flow of drugs into the US has continued, without interruption.  Narco police point to large confiscations of intercepted drugs as evidence of success.   But all they accomplish is to make the price higher on the street.  To narco crime kingpins, intercepted shipments are simply part of the price of doing business.

After 47 years, it should be obvious the war on drugs can never be won.  What needs to be done is to put smuggling operations and narco police out of business by legalization of all drugs.  They should be highly taxed with the proceed ideally going to drug education and rehabilitation.

There are already models for legalization:

The idea that a border wall is needed is absolute nonsense. The number of people going across the border illegally has been reduced year after year and we've already spent a lot of money on border security in the last decade. What is needed is a comprehensive immigration policy, plain and simple. We need to give undocumented immigrants a way forward bringing their very numbers to light. Taking care of the DACA folks is common sense since these folks are already contributing immensely to our society.

The problem is Trump and the Republicans who mislead the people in the US. The other day I was listening to C-Span and they had a statistician from a conservative think tank illustrate the truth in the numbers. I noted a whole lot of folks call in and basically call him a commie. This is understandable from certain parts of the country these days. There are a whole lot of people who don't trust the government for a whole host of reasons. One major reason is that they've been lied to year after year. Yes, people are suffering in this country and yes, it's difficult for a lot of folks to trust people they call "Liberals", basically because they believe those "Liberals" don't care about them. For those folks its heresy to listen to rich educated people to tell them that they are not informed, that they should become more informed, especially when they are struggling just to pay their bills or find a decent job. One guy called in on the Democrat line saying he changed parties recently and yet neither party is doing any thing for those living in his state of W. Virginia where for several generations the only decent job was working in the coal mine.

He reminded folks that it was the coal miners who made the industrial revolution in this country possible and now they are simply out of luck.

We do need to heal this country. But I firmly believe we need honest government that is progressive without apology. The first way to get folks informed is to give them a good start with decent work, training for work, healthcare, etc...

What is going on in Venezuela now is horrid. Trump is the wrong president at the wrong time on that score. This country needs to lead in a positive way, but that does not mean forced regime change. It does not mean cutting aide and blocking economic growth for people who are struggling. We've done that too many times in the America's and it shows. It's the reason why we have caravans of desperate folks trying to escape from poverty, drug gangs and corrupted government officials who have been supported by the US.

Talk the truth and don't stop talking the truth!

Peace!
