What happens between now and January in Congress?

Recommended Posts

So the Republicans still have a couple of months before the heroes sweep in and kick their spineless butts out of the House. What happens in the interim? Couldn't Trump and his lackies do all kinds of damage before the Dems arrive, like firing Mueller? Couldn't they act fast and do irreversible damage?

Yes, this is an issue in our system, that lame ducks (that's why we have a term for it) who know they were voted out, can do any harm they want.

That's what I was afraid of. So how come we are not hearing anything about this in the media (i.e. angry Republicans or Trump fast-tracking their authoritarian agenda)?

I don't think they're actually doing that much at this point - they just could.

what is going on with the Republican Freedom Caustics.

https://truthout.org/articles/house-republicans-terrible-before-the-midterms-are-now-much-worse/

So they say the liberals should not become too progressive. They might seem to be too socialist. Should they offer up Anti-Socialist Insurance Policies, just in case you are suddenly caught up in an anti-capitalist world, so that you can continue to get screwed by all the rich folk if ever things do change too much and too quickly?

It's always what will happen if you allow the socialist to determine your future we hear from the right even though the system is already rigged.

I thought this article shows some of the incredible misfits who sit in the US congress these days and how much harm they continue to cause. We all know this. That it is quite insane.

Peace!

Terrific article by William Rivers Pitt !  A concise description of the Republican worst-of-the-worst, "The Freedom Caucus" in the House of Representatives.   In a seeming paradox, Pitt shows how popular each of these reprehensibles are in their districts, before predicting their demise.  I hope he is prescient about the latter.

Looks like this thread is going off topic a bit. But I realized one answer to my question. A reason the Repubs can't go crazy between now and Jan. is that deal-making is probably already going on between them and the incoming Dems. The Dems can say "if you do a bunch of stupid crap before we come in, when we do we will mess you up this way...". Knowing they will need cooperation from the Dems means the Repubs (and Trump) can't do whatever they want like before November.

I don't think either deals or holding off are happening. Republicans got the one deal done they really care about, the tax cuts for the rich. Before the election, they promised they were going to work hard on a middle clsss tax cut - watch them not do that.

Iif there is going to be another tax cut, it will only be for the rich. They wouldn't vote a tax cut for those responsible for voting them out of power in the house. Their revenge would be another tax cut for their rich corporate  interests.

Undoubtedly.

To give lip-service to their own constituents, if nothing else, Republican tax cuts for the rich are usually accompanied some small, insignificant tax cut for everyone else.  Once such a bill is passed, The Right Wing Noise Machine saturates the airwaves with spin exaggerating the Middle Class tax cut, out of all proportion.  And barely mention the far larger cuts for top earners.

That is true. The middle-class tax cuts are insignificant. I think most Republicans on the street would be hard-pressed to explain what kind of benefit they get from these tax cuts. They simply vote for Repubs out of fear that the Dems will tax them too much. It seems you have to be inherently non-caring about others to be a Repub. George Lakoff, in "Moral Politics" explains that the average Repub., who is not rich, looks up at the rich Repubs. and imagines they can get there too. They see those people as the ones who have worked hard and deserve what they have accumulated. It is a moral outlook.
