Manning was not pardoned by Obama. Rather, she had her outrageous 35 year sentence commuted/reduced, as I recall. Obama was harsh to whistleblowers.

Oh. Okay. Thanks.

Looks like we may have a government shutdown tomorrow night because Republicans will not address DACA in their spending bill.

Trump broke DACA and now they refuse to fix it.

Of course we have a shutdown because Republicans do not want to allow DACA to be extended. They want children brought here from other countries to have to leave and go where they know nothing about.

Regarding the minimum wage, I tend to be something of a capitalist Liberal.  What we really need is for our markets to be properly structured and refereed so that a minimum wage is unnecessary.  Anyone offering less than it costs to survive would simply find no takers.  That requires aggressively dealing with cartels and monopolies, keeping the market for labor properly competitive.  And a business model that cannot survive paying market wages is just a bad business model, and will deservedly die out and be replaced by things that are more productive.  So ideally, a minimum wage would simply be unnecessary.

Of course, it isn't right now, in part because our system exacerbates the conditions that necessitate a minimum wage:  the concentration of wealth and power and the shrinking number of employers competing for labor.

Taxes should be progressive, like wind resistance.  I don't know where the lines should be drawn, but beyond some number, your dollars earned should be taxed at at least 75%.  Maybe higher.  This is an imperfect solution to a problem in reality, in economics.  The feedback effect of wealth in our democracy.  The more wealth you have, the greater your political access and influence.  That influence nudges the regulatory and legal environment in your favor, so you earn even more, and it actually gets easier.  Progressive taxes offset the political influence of wealth in our system.

Highly progressive taxes are part of the answer.  The top 1% could easily be taxed at a 95% rate and not suffer any setback in the lifestyles to which they have become accustomed.  As it is now, staggeringly large fortunes are being stashed in foreign banks to illegally avoid taxes.  And much money the wealthy have no other use for, goes in the pockets of Conservative elected officials, causing a lopsided political system.

Democratic Socialist countries like Sweden, The Netherlands and New Zealand tax their rich at a high rate.  Some have fled, seeking foreign tax havens.  But many of their top earners have stayed, ostensibly, seeing the justice of the system.  Sweden, for instance, has retained industrial giants like Saab aircraft, Volvo autos, trucks and heavy earth-moving equipment and Udderholm Steel, producing some of the most advanced alloys on the planet.

As it has been explained on Fox News, if we try to tax corporations as necessary to maintain this kind of stable, vibrant, wealthy economy so that they can be here and do business and make boatloads of money...they'll all leave and take their ball with them, and then we'll all be very sorry....even though this land is awash in wealth in natural resources and talent.

Always sounded like BS to me.  If Apple doesn't like American corporate taxes, Apple can go sell iPhones in the third world.  Let me know how that works out for you.  I'm guessing you're not going to get $800 apiece for them there, though.

So if they want to do business in a place like this, they have to pay what it costs to sustain a place like this.  Stop telling us if they don't get a free lunch on our dime, that they'll leave.  Buzz off then.  Go.  Somebody else will be HAPPY to step into your place and build a nice business paying American taxes so they can live in a nice place like America.

The Fox Right thing is kind of like a rich person living in a really nice house with a giant mortgage saying to the bank, "My hot water heater has broken, and my kitchen is dated.  If you don't fix these things I will leave and buy a house somewhere else.  And if you do not agree to make my mortgage payments for me while you're at it, I will leave and mortgage it with someone else."   If banks operated like that, then the banks would soon be out of business.  (In that scenario, the middle class would be the bank.)  I think we all recognize that if you want to live in a nice house, you have to work and pay to keep it nice.  Not demand that somebody else do it so that you can get all the enjoyment out of it.

Yes it baffles me why in the environment of high debt and big deficits that we have taxes cut so low.

It will cause severe economic adversity when the Democrats take back government in the next two election cycles.  The Right Wing Noise Machine will blame this adversity squarely on the Democrats.

Trump wants a military parade in his honor like Kim Jung Un or President Bush. I hope he loses his re-election bid like Bush did.

And in addition, I hope Congress denies him the funds for his parade.  But the Republican majority are such boot lickers they will probably go along with it

Can they fund it without the Democrats?

l really think the party needs to much sooner than later start fanning the flames and start hitting the networks and cable companies social media and other outlets to get the message out in infomercials and other methods to the public now, the left needs to unmercifully start educating people now and all the way through November, the door is open to slam dunk this midterm at record levels and when your standing on the high ground pour it on.

Right now a lot of what is going on is behind-the-scenes fund-raising. That will make it possible to drown the airwaves when everyone is thinking about voting.

You are correct but long publicity campaigns burn up a lot of money ...  Something they have, more than we do.

From a practical point of view, this sounds like a good plan.

That is what is really happening. And the individual Democrats are out-raising their leading opponents.

I have a question how are company's going to afford a $20 dollar an hour minimum wage?

Like over 80% of them are small businesses and when you talk fast food the profit margins are only around 3%

We could start with a $10 an hour minimum wage.

Some places in the states already have over $10 an hour, why do we need to raise it naionally ?

If you ask me places like Seattle and new york should have a $35 dollar minimum wage , that's like $8 bucks an hour in South Carolina when you look at low cost of living and taxes .

Everywhere in the country should be required to have a $10 an hour minimum wage. That is why we should raise it nationally. Even in South Carolina it is hard to make it on the current minimum wage.
