The best sandwich

Recommended Posts

Tampa and Miami have a great signature sandwich called a 'Cuban'. Piled high with roast pork, ham, swiss cheese and salami (salami in Tampa only), it was a typical lunch for Cuban workers in the cigar industry (back when that was a thing). Tampa also had a lot of Italian immigrants, hence the salami.

Montreal has a great signature sandwich they call 'smoked meat sandwich'. (It's a variety of pastrami.) It used to be a Jewish thing,  but now the best purveyor of smoked meat is a Greek guy named Pete Varvaro. He owns a place off the island of Montreal called Smoke Meat Pete. Beside the best smoked meat, it features live Blues music every night.

I had the munchies.  I put leftover spaghetti  on a bun and made me a spaghetti  sandwich.  It was really good

I'm at work.  All the talk about sandwiches made me want a Cuban, so that's what I'm having right this second.

When I was a student in Montreal I used to sometimes go to Café Santropol. They put some odd things into sandwiches, like a slice of pear and alfalfa sprouts with ham. They were really good though. :)  The word was a portmanteau of santé (= health) and metropole (=metropolis).

It looks like they're still there, same spot near the universities.: https://www.yelp.com/biz/café-santropol-montréal-5
