The Victory of Donald Trump and the New Political Correctness

Recommended Posts

Well, the collective unenlightenment, dull-wittedness, and white-trashiness of the red states is now about to be destructively incarnate in the presidency of Donald J. Trump. Those members of the electorate who voted for him have done something truly horrendous, and it will indeed have evil consequences. I recently wrote an article in which I characterized the takeover of the Republican Party by Tea Partiers and alt-rightists as the inmates gaining control of the asylum, well, now the inmates have actually seized control of the government to boot, and there will certainly be a price to pay.

But of course rather than being too self-critical as a society we retreat, as per usual, into false consciousness in various ways. For instance, a new political correctness is already taking shape, one which involves not being harshly critical of or “condescending” toward the type of unconscientized workfolk and right-wing rubes who cast their ballot for Mr. Trump in droves. According to the narrative that the news media immediately began to construct blue-collar voters who selected Mr. Trump to be their next president have simply been experiencing economic immiseration and disaffectedness, and thanks to his focus on addressing their plight and playing the part of their spokesperson, voting for Mr. Trump became an outlet for their pain and disgruntlement. He was able to sell himself to them as their champion against an establishment that had disregardfully and “condescendingly” forsaken them, and as a validator of their grievances and attitudes, and for politicians the lesson to be learned is that it very much behooves them to adopt the new political correctness of respecting the earthy and angry viewpoint of Joe Sixpack.

Well, although it’s certainly true that the working class of our society has been immiserated and made to feel disregarded by the establishment, and although Mr. Trump certainly exploited this, there’s a bit more to it than that. For decades now the conservative movement has been cultivating pro-capitalism, anti-leftism, and a focus on certain scapegoats and alien threats such as hispanic immigrants and Muslims. The blue-collar masses who voted for Mr. Trump aren’t merely feeling economic pain and anger about being condescended to by conventional politicians, thanks to the efforts of the conservative movement they’re guilty of giving the capitalist ruling class a free pass and superficially focusing on trade deals associated in their minds with new world order liberals such as the Clintons; of misperceiving progressives to be disdainful of them when in fact progressives are merely disapproving of their bigotry and actually have their best interests at heart; of misidentifying immigrants as the cause of their economic hardships when of course the real culprits are the capitalist system itself, and the capitalist ruling class; and of misblaming Muslims for terrorism which in fact has been provoked by the economic and cultural imperialism, the hegemonic behavior, and military aggressions we’ve visited upon Muslim peoples, and which is also largely just a pretext for more hegemonic behavior and military aggression. Mr. Trump merely pandered, quite effectively, to all of this wrongheadedness.

In short, Trump voters fell prey to his liberal establishment-bashing, immigrant-scapegoating, and Muslim-demonizing schtick because their mentality has been conditioned by the right to think in terms of a nefarious “liberal establishment” rather than direct critical attention at the capitalist-plutocratic establishment; and to be xenophobic and racist, to hold alien others responsible for our economic troubles and the dangerousness of the world, rather than recognize the more fundamental causal role played by our own economic elites and by an economico-political system that allows them to pursue their self-interest and class interests at the expense of the 99%. That is, anti-progressivism, anti-immigrantism, race prejudice, and anti-Muslim bigotry contaminates the disgruntlement of the red-state Everyman but the new political correctness would have us refrain from bluntly stating this fact and superficially view him as righteously resentful. Well, I’m sorry, but there’s nothing righteous about failing to realize that the real enemy of the workingperson is the capitalist power elite and its ideological protectors, aka conservatives, not the “liberal elite”, not powerless immigrants, and not Middle Easterners.

No, the new political correctness is an utter load of rubbish, Trump and his supporters are indeed mentally unsophisticated, benighted, and dangerous, and this truth needs to be spoken in a quite explicit fashion, not denied or spoken in a toned-down fashion. Beware and reject the new political correctness, the latest manifestation of false consciousness, for only the truth will set us free, free from the nightmare that has only just begun, free from the specter of alt-right fascism, free from the economico-political system that has now degenerated to the point that the unfit, demagogic, and sociopathic likes of a Donald Trump can ascend to the presidency and the alt-right can threaten the ideal of democracy. Yes, political correctness oppresses, truth liberates. And the now politically-incorrect truth is that Mr. Trump is evil and those who voted for him made a stupid choice, behind which, in many cases, is a stupid conservative mentality. Although it might seem that stating this controversial bit of truth so candidly will only further polarize our society ultimately only the truth, stated and acknowledged without equivocation, will heal the divisions and hatreds generated by the right.

Yes, the election of Mr. Trump involves a serious political-cultural regression.

Most conhole voters can't keep up, can't hack it. Can't get a good paying job with a GED. Can't get their prayers to Jeezus make their life better. Can't get their wife to stop bitching that the fridge on the porch of their double wide is outa beer

Trump flipped 12 districts to win Michigan. Everywhere you look in Mi. there are a majority of citizens who cannot hack it, and keep up. Millions in Mi. have GED's and nothing more. I do not understand why a Christian cannot get their prayers to Jesus. Mi. sucks. Every street in the state has a trailer with an empty refrigerator out front. Look at what the dems have done to a once great state. ONCE GREAT STATE.

Trump voters will indeed soon have blood on their hands, because it’s of course quite predictable that Mr. Trump’s aggressive and dominance-oriented personality will cause him to take provocative actions, to exercise the powers of the presidency in bellicose ways that will incite more, rather than protect us from, terrorism.

And then there’s North Korea. I’ll merely quote from an article in The Atlantic: “Picture Donald Trump in the White House, late at night, alone. His CIA director calls to inform him that North Korea is posing a possibly imminent nuclear threat to the United States. Is it plausible to believe that a man of Trump’s character, temperament and intellect will be able to ask the questions, and take the actions, that the moment requires of him? Hillary Clinton might very well get the moment wrong; these situations represent choices between sets of bad, and worse, options. But it chills the blood to imagine the singularly unequipped Donald Trump managing the United States through such a crisis.”

Btw, anyone who honestly thinks that a sociopathic capitalist fat cat like Mr. Trump is going to be the guardian of the interests of the working-class underdog genuinely needs to have his/her thought processes examined.

Let me nutshell it. For decades now the Republican Party and the conservative movement have done an extremely diligent and effective job of miseducating and proselytizing blue-collar voters to take as gospel an ideological interpretation, a partisan narrative in which the establishment and status quo that adversely affects their lives is a “liberal”-spawned, Democratic Party-maintained political order and class bent on benefiting itself and imposing an insidious “liberal” elitist agenda.

Alas, this crock of conservative caca functions to keep the minds of a great many voters from making contact with the reality that the real status quo adversely impacting their lives features capitalist hegemons, i.e. corporate and financial elites; and the entire government, including both of its major parties, functioning by and large to protect and serve, to express the power of capitalist overlords. And of course their minds being quite out of touch with this actual reality, as a result of it having been thoroughly supplanted by the ideological faux reality of the right, voters are indeed susceptible to the “liberal status quo”-bashing demagoguery of fake champions of the little guy like Mr. Trump, it can indeed obviously be used quite effectively to channel their dissatisfaction and anger against Democrats and into support for Republicans.

Well, this, plus pandering to the negativity bias and threat-oriented cognitive style at the cognitive and psychological core of conservatism (which of course is manifested as anti-“political correctness” [i.e. anti-tolerance], xenophobia, racism, and Islamophobia) is of course what really accounts for the Trump phenomenon, and the tragedy of his election to the highest office in the land. Which is all to say that what Mr. Trump’s victory comes down to is not merely the righteous disgruntlement of working-class members of the electorate, but rather their wrong thinking and bigotry, which has been carefully cultivated by the conservative camp and tapped into and played upon by Mr. Trump.

But then here comes the new political correctness, made to order, which one could already hear emerging on news programs on election night, to encourage us to gloss over the ideological distortion of reality and racism that Trump voters suffer from; refrain from harshly criticizing them even though they richly deserve to be reproved in rather severe terms; and instead unfairly assign all blame to Democrats for not getting it, for not registering the dissatisfaction of voters with politics as usual. This, sparing Trump voters any impugnment and adopting an analysis that lays the whole catastrophe at the doorstep of allegedly out-of-touch Democrats, is indeed quite dangerous as it helps to forgive and legitimize the selection of Trump by voters and to protect his conservative backers from the ugly truth about the mentality that they promote for their own political gain, of course thereby enabling them to continue to gain and retain power to the detriment of the working class and our society. And so, in conclusion, I would urge everyone to reject and to do his/her part to expose the insidiousness of the new political correctness coming into fashion with the coming to power of Mr. Trump. Yes, this is one of those cases where hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil will obviously only lead to more and worse evil.

P.S. We should all support nonviolent protests against Mr. Trump’s ascent to power, the alternative is to go quietly into the clutches of a narcissistic sociopath and the conservative movement. This is not a morally acceptable option, not in the slightest.

No worries about a narcissistic sociopath. Clinton lost.

As much as I agree with the OP about the virulent anti-intellectualism of the Trump movement and American conservatism in general, the left is not having the conversations with itself that it needs to have.

What are you going to protest? That the system worked?

If you care that much then go about figuring out why some 6,000,000 people who voted for Obama didn't bother to show up this time when so much was at stake.

Only bigotry taking place is yours and only from an intellectual point of view as you do not respect natural balancing sustaining individual displacement of ancestry alive now. Hell, you cannot believe this moment is the ever lasting core of eternal changes specifically separated now historically even as self evident as you living in your own skin as simulataneously spaced apart as everyone you critique with hypothetical standards assumed since learning to repeat a common belief.

part of it is because they forgot about unions ever since the Republicans began dismantling them. You want the unpolitically correct truth, how could transgender bathrooms become a rallying cry for the working class to vote in droves to clinton.

How could someone miss the point by so much? It isn't people of other religions, skin color or women that we (Trump supporters) hate.

It's progressivism that we hate.

Hmm, so you're opposed to anti-racism and anti-sexism but you're not racists and sexists.

Yes, apparently the line about it being possible for anyone to grow up to become president that middle-class American mommies and daddies feed their children is true, even an unpleasant, vulgar, sociopathic, utterly unqualified fat cat like Mr. Trump can get himself elected to the highest office in the land with nothing but a talent for self-promotion and demagoguery!

Well, of course Trump chumps are so engrossed in wishful thinking and the sense of empowerment that comes from believing that they at last have a champion of their point of view in the White House that their minds aren’t in touch with the dark and dangerous reality of Mr. Trump. But they’ll soon enough experience a rude awakening, because Mr. Trump of course is a narcissistic sociopath with zero real commitment to his supporters, to their interests and principles, or to anything at all other than his own self-aggrandizement and it certainly won’t take long at all for him to impolitely smack them in the face with a disabusing and bubble-bursting revelation of his actual, self-serving, and all-around atrocious character.
