The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration

Recommended Posts

I can tell you from first hand experience that most people are arrested for drugs and battery (usually domestic disputes). These are brought on by poverty, despair, and stress. You may not believe this, but in Ohio when they mandated car insurance the jail population spiked. Prior to insurance companies buying that piece of legislation from our corrupt politicians, insurance was only requested if you were cited in a traffic accident. After the legislation, people were losing their vehicles, and subsequently their jobs because they simply couldn't afford it. We essentially criminalized poverty. When criminality is defined by money and not by morality, down the fucking drain society goes.

Addiction should not be considered a crime.

African Americans are disproportionately poor. This outcome should come as no surprise.
