Old Mack
Police said a Florida man who asked if a bulletproof vest “still worked” was fatally shot by his cousin. A Tampa police report said 23-year-old Joaquin Mendez put on the vest late on Saturday and “wondered aloud whether it still worked”. The report said Mendez’s cousin, 24-year-old Alexandro Garibaldi, pulled out a gun and responded: “Let’s see.”Officers found Mendez outside the house with a gunshot wound in his chest. He died at a hospital. According to the police report, Garibaldi initially told officers he found his wounded cousin after hearing a gunshot. However, police said a witness described Garibaldi shooting Mendez. Police said the vest was found inside the house, having sustained a gunshot.Garibaldi was held on Sunday without bond on a manslaughter charge. fishhead
Just exactly how long does a vest last before it's expiration date?
Old Mack
Depends on a lot of factors BUT even a brand new one won't stop certain projectiles.

blackdog
It was a flack jacket..... Not "bullet proof" FYI vests are rated by Level national Institute of Justice. I II III IIA IIIA and then with plates added levels III and IV The soft armor ratings are for handgun rounds and buckshot the higher numbers not just stopping Penetration but limiting blunt force trauma. The addition of plates extend protection to 308 rifle then 3006 armor piercing round. Vests have a life of some years and cleaning, heat, dirt sweat etc will decrease effectiveness. Manufacturers limit life based on materials and duty life. 10 years is not uncommon
