One of the men charged with killing the cousin of NBA star Dwyane Wade was "on his daily break from an electronic monitoring bracelet" at the time of the murder, Chicago police said Sunday.

An exasperated Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie T. Johnson said at a news conference that Derren Sorrells' ankle monitor wasn't active when 32-year-old Nykea Aldridge was shot and killed in front of a school on Friday. Sorrells and his brother, Darwin Sorrells Jr., were charged with first-degree murder and attempted murder on Sunday.

"When Nykea Aldridge registered her child at school on Friday afternoon she wasn’t aware that shed be the subject of national headlines just hours later," Johnson said.

Both brothers were known gang members and repeat offenders, Johnson said. Darwin had been out on parole since February and was a "career gun offender," Johnson said. Derren had six prior felony arrests. Derren's ankle monitor was inactive from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., ostensibly so he could look for work, Deputy Chief Jimmy Jones said on Sunday.

“This individual chose to use his time by killing someone," Jones said.

Police believe the Sorrells brothers intended to shoot the driver of a vehicle that ferried Aldridge to the school where she was attempting to register her child. The driver, who immediately cooperated with police, was allegedly targeted because he "exchanges looks" with the suspects and was from out of town, Jones said. The Sorrells tried chasing the driver down and fired at him, police said, but instead hit Aldridge, who was pushing a baby carriage.

Why aren't these people in prison ?

It's like the drug dealer in Massachusetts that was arrested 8 times for selling drugs...

And never goes to jail

Even better, save us some money. Make it a mandatory and immediate death penalty after the third one.

Good question Zo. I guess it begins because we cannot afford a prison system to keep them locked away using current priorities. Therefore government releases them back into society so they can victimize more innocent citizens.

These are latchkey children. America should require 3 years of community service for high school grads, where they learn about humanity by helping in their community's, cleaning houses, streets, baby sitting, watering, lawns, etc. AND being taught morals, ethics, behavior, manners, training for jobs, work ethics, etc. We need to change youths attitude in America.

We had a shooting at the park across the street Friday night. Some kid was shot in the leg, sprayed bullets all over the park, and drove down my street to the end where they abandoned the car a block from here. So most likely the shooter is white and lives in this development somewhere. Question is why are these kids doing this crap.

Community service isn't a bad idea..

However, I think much of the problem is broken homes...

And I think more and more judges are letting these people walk out of court and prisons.

In this case a career gun offender is walking around with a GUN..

In Massachusetts we have a (1) year mandatory prison sentence for anyone carrying a gun without a license.

However in the "fine print" it's a judges final decision...

Last year we have a 17 year old shoot up a birthday party...

And was still walking around a year later..

He finally got killed in a gang related murder...

I would be for a minimum sentence based on whatever the law has now + plus any extended time to ensure they are rehabilitated and can return safely to society with full us citizen rights. Second offense is life.

The Armed Career Criminal Act (ACCA, 18 U.S.C. § 924(e)) is another federal gun law that requires a 15-year mandatory minimum sentence for anyone who possesses a gun or ammunition and also has three prior convictions for drug trafficking or violent felonies.

Federal law requires lengthy 5-, 7-, 10-, and 30-year mandatory minimum sentences for possessing, brandishing, or discharging a gun in the course of a drug trafficking crime or a crime of violence (18 U.S.C. § 924©). There are also mandatory minimum sentences of 25 years for each subsequent conviction. The law requires that these mandatory prison terms be served back-to-back (i.e., consecutively, not concurrently) with each other and with any other punishment the person receives for the underlying offense
