The problem is Big Money in politics. Since money buys elections over 90% of the time, those politicians taking legalized bribes in the form of large campaign contributions and lobbying money, need not be responsive to their electorate. They merely need to hire the necessary ad and speech writers to misinform the public of their real intentions. The deliberately misnamed Citizen's United decision has exacerbated the situation in many ways including legalizing anonymous contributions by Big Donors.

 

Large campaign and lobbying donors include corporations and the handful of ultra-rich people that own them. These plutocratic entities do not make political investments without expecting a return. If a politician fails to reciprocate with the expected legislation, the money dries up. The legislation required in return for Big Donations, always requires that wealth be funneled upwards. Often, the legislation is camouflaged by adding it to other laws or misleading titles like "Right to Work" or "Citizen's United" etc.

 

Virtually all Republican politicians are on the take as are many neoliberal Democrats. But there are still a significant number of Democrats, resisting temptation and working for the Ordinary People of our Nation.
