The GOP on the Eve of Destruction

by B. Moyers & M. Winship | huffingtonpost.com | Posted: 12/04/2015 7:18 am EST

"For reasons hard to fathom, the Republicans seem to have made up their minds: they will divide, degrade and secede from the Union.

They will do so with bullying, lies and manipulation, a willingness to say anything, no matter how daft or wrong. They will do so by spending unheard of sums to buy elections with the happy assistance of big business and wealthy patrons for whom the joys of gross income inequality are a comfortable fact of life.

By gerrymandering and denying the vote to as many of the poor, the elderly, struggling low-paid workers, and people of color as they can. And by appealing to the basest impulses of human nature: anger, fear and bigotry.

Turn on your TV or computer, pick up a paper or magazine and you can see and hear them baying at the moon. Donald Trump is just the most outrageous and bigmouthed of the frothing wolf pack of deniers and truth benders. Tom Engelhardt of TomDispatch writes, "There's nothing, no matter how jingoistic or xenophobic, extreme or warlike that can't be expressed in public and with pride by a Republican presidential candidate."

Thomas Mann and Norman Ornstein shocked the inside-the-Beltway establishment when they published their book, It's Even Worse than It Looks. The two political scientists wrote, "The Republican Party has become an insurgent outlier - ideologically extreme; contemptuous of the inherited social and economic policy regime; scornful of compromise; unpersuaded by conventional understanding of facts, evidence and science; and dismissive of the legitimacy of its political opposition."

And Thomas Mann noted, "The burden is on the GOP because they are currently the major source of our political dysfunction. No happy talk about bipartisanship can obscure that reality. Unless other voices and movements arise within the Republican Party to changes its character and course, our dysfunctional politics will continue."

All of these sad examples are but symptoms of a deeper disease - the corruption and debasement of society, government and politics. It is a disease that eats away at the root and heart of what democracy is all about. Remember the opening phrase of the Preamble to the Constitution committing "We, the People" to the most remarkable compact of self-government ever - for the good of all?

The Republicans are shredding that vision as they make a bonfire of the hopes that inspired it and, in the process, reduce the United States to a third-rate, sorry excuse for a nation.

It is the Republicans who are willing to wreck the country to maintain the gross inequality that divides us - inequality which rewards the party leaders and their donors, just as slavery rewarded white supremacists. They would tear the Republic apart, rip to pieces its already fragile social compact, and reap the whirlwind of a failed experiment in self-government."

As we sit contemplting our navels and wondering why our beloved Democracy is only a shell of itself, we must consider the relevant point of admitting that 'We Allowed It To Happen,' we either didn't see the poison emanting from Congress, or we were too lazy to do manything about it. Now we are stuck with the meager remnants of a Democracy tht we once lived, worked and died by.

In the morning light of a fresh and new 2016 year that is ready for us to either make things right, or totally fuck up !! We need to stand together...not by our political party, religion, or bank statements but by sheer American patriotism that has been waiting for some action from the masses that now have a colossal job of getting rid of the stink-weed languishing in Congress that seek to destroy the American way of life.

We are now deep in a bizarre culture of a seriously declining Democracy, with millions of guns that threaten our very existence and a republican controlled Congress that refuses to do anything to halt the daily murders of innocent Americans so that Congress can keep receiving their payoffs from the NRA, a Congress that is gutting every social program Democrats had in place for the poor and disenfranchised. Women have lost the decision of deciding anything about our bodies, and we are fast approaching the Fascist Gestapo way of life.

It becomes imperative that we vote for every Democrat on Election Day as a start back to the happy prosperous days we lost in our poor protection of Democracy which becomes a fragile creature to live by under thw wrong hands.

Trump has already been there and done that, and still the establishment cannot neutralize him, as the poor and disenfranchised republicans want him as a whipping boy to punish the rich republicans who have left them on the side of the road in their desperate quest for the White House. Republicans are good at dumping people they consider on the fringe of poverty.

There is little reason for anyone who is poor and/or disenfranchised to be a Republican, and yet, due to ignorance of history, economics and reality in general, plus racism, there are millions. But could Trump gain even more of their support by biting off the head of a large, live Rhode Island Red on prime time TV?

The great Republican meltdown tickles my heart! Let's just say they are getting what they deserve.

NY has poisoned the Republican party.

We are now deep in a bizarre culture of a seriously declining Democracy, with millions of guns

democrats have divided and are ruining the country, we live in a Republic not a democracy,, our gun rights are protected and Obama can not take them away,, and Dems will lose votes because of trying to take them away.

Trump has barely spent any money at all, and yall are crying about him fighting tooth and nail with the democrats,,, Trump is just as brash as the democrats and he speaks the truth and his mind... Americans in both partys are listening.

Democrats gerrymandered all over the states and districts, repubs just put them back in the normal places,,, but they are in control so they got to do it legally lol keeps us in power and yall crying about it.

Trump will probably take New York, and New Jersey and Penn. along with ohio and florida in the general election...... Trump will win New york and that alone will win him the white house !!!!

OH HAPPY DAYS ARE COMING

I've been from the poorer side to the upper middle class side of the spectrum in my life. There wasn't a dime's worth of difference between Clinton, Bush or obama in my personal circumstances. People who are sitting around waiting for a political party to ride to the rescue are in for a sorry life.

thiose typecasting ancestors as segregated people due to race, creed, color, national origin, civic pride, collective soul, gender bias, economic tip, academic interpretation, artistic impression, and total sum desire to never completely understand anything so simple as being self contained to one exponential moment as being Eternity in full view of every lifetime specifically spaced apart now.

Fuck Huffington Post. They are leading misdirectionists that will do anything to make sure malcontents stay in control of power of suggesting what could be possible tomorrow or next generation.
