High Drug Prices Are Killing Americans

by Sen. Bernie Sanders | huffingtonpost.com | Posted: 08/29/2015 3:21 pm EDT

"All across the country, Americans are finding that the prices of the prescription drugs they need are soaring. Tragically, doctors tell us that many of their patients can no longer afford their medicine. As a result, some get sicker. Others die.

Americans pay the highest prices for prescription drugs in the world -- by far. Drug costs increased 12.6 percent last year, more than double the rise in overall medical costs.

Even before that, we spent nearly 40 percent more per person on prescriptions in 2013 than they did in Canada, the next most expensive industrialized country. Prescription drugs cost nearly five times more per person in this country than they did in Denmark that year.

Most Americans -- Republicans, Democrats, and independents -- want Congress to do something about drug prices. 86 percent of those polled, including 82 percent of Republicans, think drug companies should be required to release information to the public on how they set their prices. Large majorities support other solutions to the drug cost problem as well.

The Kaiser poll also showed that Republican voters care more about drug prices than they do about repealing Obamacare. They should. Republicans in Congress have tried to repeal that law so many times that it's an embarrassment.

Millions of Americans still can't see a doctor when they need one. Another poll showed that nearly one in five Americans didn't fill a prescription because of cost.

That should not be happening in the United States of America -- but it is. None of this has happened by accident. Our drug costs are out of control because that's the way the pharmaceutical companies want it.

Other countries have national health insurance like the Medicare For All plan I have proposed, and these national plans are able to negotiate better prices. In this country, however, drug lobbyists have been able to block Medicare from negotiating better prices on behalf of the American people.

The pharmaceutical industry is also riddled with fraud. As a result, the American people are ripped off to the tune of billions of dollars per year. Virtually every major pharmaceutical company in this country has either been convicted of fraud or has reached a fraud settlement. Offenses include price manipulation, kickbacks, and substandard manufacturing practices.

Between our government's unwillingness to negotiate prices and its failure to effectively fight fraud, it's no wonder drug prices are out of control. We should use our buying power to get better deals for the American people. Other countries do it; why aren't we?

Americans should not have to live in fear that they will go bankrupt if they get sick. People should not have to go without the medication they need just because their elected officials aren't willing to challenge the drug lobby. The public is fed up, and they have a right to be fed up.

It is time we joined the rest of the industrialized world -- not only by enacting a national health care program, but by implementing prescription-drug policies that work for everybody, not just the CEOs of the pharmaceutical industry."

Thanks to Senator Bernie Sanders who appears to realize the fraud, manipulation, various conflict of interests Congress is gripped with in their greedy quest to become multi millionaires after one year in Congress instead of faithfully carrying out their oaths to perform their duties to the American people.

The massive corruption permeating our Congress is responsible for every ill that is afflicting America and it is time we vote out, fire, and charge with corruption and racketeering every Congressmen that is riddled with conflict of interest charges. Every instance of corruption should be investigated and the guilty banished from every goverrnment office in America forthwith.

This is a formidable undertaking, but remember it didn't happen overnight and now has a stranglehold on every government issue that comes before Congress for a vote. It won't be easy, but it is possible to clean up Washington and the nation with the sheer power of the American people in a righteous cause - one that needs resolution immediately.

We need our elected leaders to be working for us, the people, not us working for little reward, little hope in the future, and little thought or concern displayed by our Congress.

Bernie said it all. Most of Congress takes bribes in return for legislation. The arrangement has been especially profitable for the drug industry, at the expense of the American consumer. These lobbyists usually have open access to the halls of Congress. Often, they get to write the laws themselves and hand them over for passage into law.

We desperately need to outlaw bribery and then enforce it. Lobbyists should be abolished. No one should have any more access to senators and congress than any ordinary citizen.

The same goes for campaign contributions. Since money buys election most of the time, the Permanent Political Class is not worried about poorly serving their constituents. We need to end the deliberately misnamed Citizens United and institute publicly funded elections.

Well spoken, I buy some of my meds out of country to avoid high cost prescriptions & $100. office visits. We should have the freedom to buy our meds without a middleman doctor go between.

We also need the ability to sue professionals for unlimited amounts without caps who harm citizens. I don't care about their personal problems with insurance companys.

Everyone and his pet knows. So why does shit cost more in US than anywhere else on the planet?

1. Patents aren't observed elsewhere so as much shit isn't made.

2. Americans use more prescription drugs than anybody else.

3. The FDA makes drug companies go to hell and back before they can sell something. Dying of cancer, well you can't have this experimental treatment because it's not approved and could kill you.

Personally, I don't give a shit. I pay $4 for generics and rarely even use my prescription coverage.

The costs of research and development, manufacturing, testing, getting a patent, and FDA approval effect the cost of the drugs. If a drug company does not make a profit after bringing the drug to market there will be no new drugs. Stockholders need to make profits. Company needs to make profits. I see no problem.

Every time tort reform is brought up by republicans, the democrats and their trial lawyer pimps shoot it down.

This has been the reason to most of the 'problems' w/ the health care industry for thirty years.

It's more profitable to treat an illness than to cure it. The fda and the pharmaceutical companies don't give a shit if you live or die as long as you can pay.

"It's more profitable to treat an illness than to cure it."

I believe this happens in some cases too.

But some drugs save lives too. It's a mix of the two.

1. Patents aren't observed elsewhere so as much shit isn't made.

Not true in countries like Denmark, Japan, Netherlands and Singapore. Yet prescription drugs are cheaper in those places.

2. Americans use more prescription drugs than anybody else.

If that was true, it would be cheaper. Instead it's more expensive here than anywhere else.

3. The FDA makes drug companies go to hell and back before they can sell something. Dying of cancer, well you can't have this experimental treatment because it's not approved and could kill you.

Other advanced countries have their equivalents of the FDA. But drugs are still cheaper in those countries.

We need our elected leaders to be working for us, the people, not us working for little reward, little hope in the future, and little thought or concern displayed by our Congress.

This is actually one of the areas the Affordable Care Act has come up short. The subsidy given to those as part of their premium support to see a doctor, isn't the real cost of healthcare, as is treatment for chronic diseases, and the associated drug costs.

This hasn't changed since the law went into effect, and wouldn't change if the law was repealed. If adjustments to the law are not made regarding these issues, it will continue to make the case for a single payer system.

The Congress ignored this for decades which led to the Affordable Care Act in the first place. If they continue to ignore it, they will be looking at a single payer system a lot faster than they think. Especially in light of the revelations regarding the failures and rampant corruption in the Veterans Administration.

The US healthcare system is to fractured to be as efficient as it could be with 50 different state Medicaid programs, a federal Medicare program, a Veterans Administration program, and indigent care requirements regarding hospital emergency room care.

Bringing all of it under one single payer program, with one set of rules, and regulations, and one funding program would be more efficient, and give the federal government the ability to more easily regulate the cost of drugs. It would also alleviate the burden put on employers as far as their costs of covering employees.

The US healthcare system is a joke, with to many people with their fingers in the pie.

Everyone and his pet knows. So why does shit cost more in US than anywhere else on the planet?

Who the fuck else is developing these medicines and pays all those smart people that went to college and studied for years of their lives to find breakthrough new medicines and medical technologies? Mexico? Russia?>

Why is it so unfair that people who work hard and literally save millions of lives or at least betters them with their medicine and technology make millions of dollars? How about every person involved in a medicine from it's thought, research creation and delivery to your hands each get $1 for the contribution to your life. Sounds fair, right? So what happens when a certain pill took 100 people to get it from nothing into your worthless fat mouth to save your shity life? Fuck all those hard working people and be a selfish worthless pig and gobble that shit down with absolutely no thankfulness or care in the world, just bitch that it costs too fucking much to compensate other people for wasting their useful to save your useless one? I bet all the people who help get you your medicine work too much to have the time to post so much BS and retardation on the internet while you sit in your mom's basement taking all your candy that makes you feel better because you cannot cope with reality thinking you're all high and mighty because people get paid for doing good things and you're too worthless to jump on the boat and make off with it or make money other way to compensate those who work. Want cheap medicine? Fine. Be useful and grow some fucking food for all the families in the drug companies and give it to them so they can take less money for payment and the cost of medicines will drop. Don't want to? STFU and pay it or live without it like every other human on the planet did 100 years ago if they didn't earn it.

WTF makes all you worthless nolives think they deserve cheap or free medicine when people that serve their country don't even get it, even if we need it?

Do meth, make lots of kids to neglect and never work a day in your life and you'll be on better healthcare then men and women who lost limbs and took bullets and shrapnel for this country. And it's still not good enough for the nolives.

.....researchers cost more to pay than oil workers. That's a retarded comparison, nice try.

Drug companies pour money into research and not all of it comes out useful. A company makes a huge breakthrough and they paid for it but the whole world and other drug companies benefit from it either directly or copying the idea/content.

I thought you claimed to be a business owner, dipshitnow. Oh, that's right, just McDonalds. Man, you must know everything about field and research companies then after all the burger flippers you've trained.
