Recovering Libertarian

Recommended Posts

I too had a brief flirtation with libertarianism.

Its a seductive idea, but its based on a false premise.

Unlike many so called libertarians, I actually read Atlas Shrugged, and found many of her observations to be particularlly damning. Plastics killed the steel industry, not politics, just like trucking killed frieght, not passenger rail. Her general accusations of incompetance and government intervention might have been approriate if America were experiencing some sort of socialist overthrow of our government, but she lived during a time when corporations ran roughshod over government.

To me, it sounded like somebody who was whining because their ideas were put into practice and didn't work, screaming, "But you're doing it wrong!"

Actually, scatch that, though as a young woman she grew up during the early 1900's, she wrote her books in the 1940's and 50's, so i guess that is not really true. Perhaps she wrote her books more as a reaction to what she saw as increasing government intervention into private business enterprise.

I like Bernie Sanders, the only thing that I don't like is his love to socialism

The market cannot meet all individual wants and needs

This is quite true. The profit motive will favor medicine that alleviates the symptoms but does not cure, as a vaccine would, because, for example, you could sell migraine pills daily, but a migraine vaccine only once. Considering all the huge profits that come from cancer fighting drugs, like chemo treatments and the drugs that relieve the effects and symptoms caused by chemo, it makes me wonder if they discovered a CURE whether they would even try to reveal it.

Rand's father was a very, very rich Jewish pharmacy store owner, who had ont pof the largest pharmacies in St Petersburg. The October Revolution forced him to sell out and move to Odessa, and eventually the Communists took over his store there as well.

Rand was reacting to FDR's mildly leftwing politics, which she thought were headed towards Stalinism. When she moved to NYC, she had a whole cadre of friends, all of them dispossessed Russian Jews.

As I said, she was not much of a capitalist, because she took all the money she made from her screenplay work and novels and invested it in a passbook account. No Rearden Metal or Colorado Oil exploitation for her!

She was the Hegelian antithesis to Nikolai Lenin. She never caught on to being an American.

The ideal of Libertarianism is a false premise today in the US, let me just state that very fact.

If you are trying to escape from tyrannical rule, what you want is freedom and liberty.

You don't want to be ruled in such a way where you have no voice, and cannot practice, say, a certain religion.

What you want is the freedom of choosing who to vote for or free speech to speak your mind with out fear of persecution.

You don't want to be persuaded to become something you don't want to become because you otherwise have

no choice of becoming anything good.

We don't want to persuaded at all they might suggest. We don't want to follow any, therefore we are libertarian.

Is a false premise.

Persuasion by force is different than persuasion by common sense.

Freedom to rule others or forge an oligarchy by luck is different than

Freedom to decide for yourself what is wrong and which is right.

Don't you need to worry about those who might persuade you

and lie?

Yes!

Does that make you a libertarian? No, not at all.

Peace!

I would never read Atlas Shrugged, its just so large!

But from reviews, I gather that Atlas Shrugged is nothing more than propaganda, in the literal sense: the use of an art form to project a political ideology.

The arguments in the book can never be pinned down because they are contained within the fiction of a novel.

Its a political as well as a philosophical premise.

The idea is that we should all act out of self-interest, and that altruism is counter productive.

Most people acting altruisticly actually are acting out of self interest, they make a conscious decision to sacrifice something for someone else for their own perceived benefit, because they are capable of empathy and do not wish to see others suffer and derive pleasure from bringing joy into the lives of others.

It really is an absurd proposition, but what galls me is that she blames the demise of the steel industry and freight rail on the incompetence of others, when it was technological progress spurred by capitalist innovation that caused the collapse of those industries. (i.e. polymer plastics, aluminum and freight trucking)

I think most republicans who claim to have read the book tend to give each other a nod and a wink as they haven't actually read it or only skimmed through it. Jhon Galts speech is over 40 pages long in the paperback.

  • I know this one, this new chat thing. I've seen it called the "shoutbox" among other things in my past. Very hard to hide from the chat box. The question is asked, there's no time to go search what other folks think, this is real time. Only seconds should be between chat box replies. This one is made for me. In the chat box one has to be quick on their feet with stuff at the ready. This chat box is the worst nightmare of anyone trying to deal with ol' teach.
