"Fewer Americans applied for unemployment benefits over the past four weeks than at any time in almost 15 years, signaling underlying strength in the labor market even as hiring cooled last month.

From mid-March through the seven days ended April 4, jobless claims averaged 282,250 a week, the lowest since June 2000, a Labor Department report showed Thursday in Washington. Applications over the latest week climbed by 14,000 to 281,000. The median forecast of 45 economists surveyed by Bloomberg called for 283,000.

The level of dismissals is consistent with an improving labor market and indicates companies are optimistic demand will strengthen after a weaker first quarter. Figures earlier this week showing job openings at a 14-year high point to a pickup in the pace of hiring after a March slowdown.

Applications stabilizing at this level are “evidence of a healthy labor market,” said Russell Price, a senior economist at Ameriprise Financial Inc. in Detroit, whose projection for 280,000 claims for the latest week was among the closest in the Bloomberg survey."

"If President Obama speaks with Cuban President Raúl Castro at the Summit of Americas this week, Castro may seek some political advice.

Turns out that Obama is more popular in Cuba than either Raúl Castro or brother Fidel Castro.

A new poll finds that 80% of Cubans have a positive view of Obama, while only 17% have a negative view.

Meanwhile, 48% of Cubans have a negative view of Raúl Castro, and 50% have a negative view of Fidel Castro.

The poll, based on 1,200 in-person interviews, was conducted by Bendixen & Amandi and commissioned by Fusion and Univision.

As regional leaders gather this week in Panama for the Summit of the Americans, observers wonder if Obama and Raúl Castro will meet. Nothing is scheduled, but the United States and Cuba are in the midst of an effort to renew diplomatic relations.

"The poll also found that Cubans are optimistic that a new, warmer relationship with the United States will lead to political and economic change on the island. Cubans also expressed widespread dissatisfaction with with the current situation on the island."

"For employed Americans, the probability of being fired hasn’t been this low in almost 15 years.

An average 282,250 workers a week applied for jobless benefits in the month ended April 4, the fewest since June 2000, according to Labor Department data issued Thursday in Washington. Another report showed consumer confidence rose last week to an almost eight-year high as Americans said it was a good time to shop.

“Consumers are confident, and confident consumers tend to spend more,” said Neil Dutta, head of U.S. economics at Renaissance Macro Research LLC in New York. “Things are improving.”

Fewer dismissals indicate companies are optimistic demand will strengthen after the world’s largest economy weakened in the first quarter under the strain of harsh winter weather, a strengthening dollar and tepid global growth. It also signals employment is likely to rebound after a report last week showed payrolls rose in March at the slowest pace in more than a year."

Obama's problem is all the economic and job growth has occurred in red states. Now that we're nearing full employment that blue states might do well for once.

"No matter if the new number from the Gallup-Healthways Well-Getting Index turns out to be a higher-water mark for President Barack Obama's overall health care law, or a milestone on the path toward his target of having practically all U.S. residents covered, remains to be observed."

April 2015 - "Cuban officials and ordinary citizens alike hailed the island's removal from the U.S. list of state sponsors of terrorism, saying the move by President Barack Obama heals a decades-old insult to national pride and clears the way to swiftly restore diplomatic relations.

"The Cuban government recognizes the president of the United States' just decision to take Cuba off a list in which it should never have been included," Josefina Vidal, Cuba's top diplomat for U.S. affairs, said Tuesday night.

Cuban and U.S. foreign-policy experts said the two governments appeared to have taken a major leap toward the reopening of embassies in Havana and Washington after four months of complex and occasionally frustrating negotiations."

So Obama brought down his own record deficits? That's an accomplishment like a fat person losing weight.

Unemployment in red states is half of that in blue states. Obama cries about it daily.

April 2015 - "U.S. banks are reporting that companies are tapping more of their credit lines to fund hiring and expand their businesses, a promising sign for the economy.

Commercial borrowers are using two or three percentage points more of their credit lines than they were a year ago, reaching levels not seen since before the financial crisis was at its height in 2009, senior officials at a number of major banks said in interviews and on conference calls this week.

Companies are using the funds for a variety of things, from boosting manufacturing capacity to investing in new businesses and building inventory as customer demand increases.

"Confidence is back," said Laura Oberst, an executive vice president at Wells Fargo & Co who oversees commercial banking for the central U.S. region. "It's fragile still, but stronger than I've seen it since the meltdown of 2008.”

Existing Home Sales

$URGE!!!

"Existing home sales in March leaped to their fastest pace in 18 months, making a well-timed upturn at the start of the peak spring buying season.

NAR's report Wednesday showed median prices rose 7.8% from March 2014, accelerating from a 2.6% rate in February to its fastest pace in a year, TD Economics' Michael Dolega said in a research note Wednesday morning. Single-family homes led the price gains; values increased 8.7% from the previous year, he said.

"The report was an uplifting one, especially after months of disappointments during the harsh winter," Dolega said.

He predicts existing home sales will see their best year of the economic recovery in 2015, rising to nearly a 5.5 million rate later this year."

April 2015 - "The number of Americans applying for first-time unemployment benefits tumbled last week to the lowest level in 15 years, a signal of broad health in the labor market.

Initial jobless claims, a proxy for layoffs across the U.S. economy, fell by 34,000 to a seasonally adjusted 262,000 in the week ended April 25, the Labor Department said Thursday. That was the lowest level for initial claims since April 15, 2000.

“Initial jobless claims continue to signal tightening in the labor market,” and the data “suggest that the softening in job growth in March may well have been a temporary quirk,” RDQ Economics co-founders John Ryding and Conrad DeQuadros said in a note to clients.

Economists surveyed by The Wall Street Journal had expected 288,000 new claims last week. Claims for the prior week were revised up slightly to 296,000.

Data on applications for unemployment benefits are volatile from week to week. In general, claims remain at low levels consistent with solid job growth."
