May 9, 2016 - "One of the Islamic State's most feared executioners and propagandists has been killed in a coalition airstrike in Iraq, the Pentagon said on Monday.

Abu Waheeb, who starred in a series of chilling execution videos, was almost unique among Isil terrorists for his willingness to appear in propaganda films without wearing a mask to disguise his identity.

He featured in dozens of Isil publicity releases, grinning for the cameras as he went about his work, and until the arrival of "Jihadi John" in late 2014, was one of the terror group's most notorious figures.

His most infamous role was in a video in which he conducted a "Quranic quiz" for three captured lorry drivers from Syria, shooting them in cold blood when they failed to answer questions correctly.

Last Friday, it seems his notoriety finally caught up with him. The Pentagon said that he was targeted that day in an airstrike in Iraq's western Anbar province, where he had been appointed at Isil's main military emir, or commander.

“On May 6, a coalition airstrike targeted Abu Waheeb, Isil’s military emir for Anbar province and a former member of Al-Qaeda in Iraq who has appeared in Isil execution videos,” Pentagon press secretary Peter Cook said.

He added: "It is dangerous to be an ISIL leader in Iraq and Syria these days, and for good reason."

May 10, 2016 - "U.S. job openings increased in March to the highest level in eight months and layoffs continued to decline, indicating the labor market remains fairly robust despite April's slowdown in employment gains.

The firmer labor market tone was also evident in another report on Tuesday, which showed small businesses increasingly having trouble finding qualified workers to fill open positions.

The JOLTS report showed a further decline in layoffs, while at the same time 2.98 million Americans quit their jobs voluntarily in March, a sign of confidence in the labor market. The quits rate was unchanged at 2.1 percent.

In a separate report, the National Federation of Independent Business said small businesses continued to report a shortage of qualified workers to fill job openings, with some saying they had either raised or planned to increase wages to attract and retain employees.

The share of small businesses reporting job openings they could not fill jumped in April, revisiting cycle highs. There was also an increase in the proportion of small business owners saying that the quality of labor was their biggest concern.

"With labor market slack diminishing, we expect to see a marked acceleration in wage growth soon," said Steve Murphy, a U.S. economist at Capital Economics in Toronto."

May 16, 2016 - "An evenly divided Supreme Court skirted the major legal questions arising from a dispute over President Obama’s healthcare program and instead announced a compromise Monday designed to clear the way for women working for religious organizations to receive the free birth control promised under the Affordable Care Act.

In a short, unanimous decision, the justices said that the Catholic charities who filed the suits and the Obama administration – at the high court’s strong urging -- had agreed in recent weeks that the female workers may "receive cost-free contraceptive coverage" without infringing on the religious rights of the church-based employers.

Based on that understanding, the justices said they saw no need to rule now on the broader legal issues, including whether the so-called contraceptives mandate violated the charities’ religious liberties or whether the government has a compelling interest in requiring contraceptives coverage for female employees.

The outcome appears to resolve, at least for now, the long-running battle between the Catholic Church hierarchy and the Obama administration."

May 21, 2016 - "Taliban leader Mullah Akhtar Mohammad Mansour was likely killed in an airstrike in Pakistan on Saturday, a U.S. official told CNN.

The official said the strike occurred around 6 a.m. ET Saturday morning in a remote area of the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, southwest of the town of Ahmad Wal.
Mansour was the target of the strike, and a second adult male combatant traveling with him in a vehicle also was likely killed, the official added.
U.S. officials are still assessing the results, the official said.
The strike was carried out by multiple unmanned aircraft operated by U.S. Special Operations forces. There was no collateral damage, the official added.
President Barack Obama authorized the strike."

May 22, 2016 - "The leader of the Taliban in Afghanistan, Mullah Akhtar Muhammad Mansour, was killed by an American drone strike, the Afghan intelligence agency said on Sunday.

Some Taliban commanders vehemently denied that Mullah Mansour was present in the area of the strike, which occurred on Saturday near the Afghan border in the Pakistani province of Baluchistan, but a statement from the intelligence agency, the National Directorate of Security, was unambiguous.

“Akhtar Muhammad Mansour, the leader of the Taliban group, was killed around 3:45 p.m. yesterday as a result of an airstrike in Dalbandin area of Baluchistan Province in Pakistan,” the statement said. “He had been under close surveillance for a while, until his vehicle was struck and destroyed on the main road in the Dalbandin area.”

May 26, 2016 - "Contracts to buy previously owned U.S. homes surged far more than expected in April to the highest level in more than a decade, another sign the economy has gained steam during the second quarter.

The National Association of Realtors said on Thursday its pending home sales index, based on contracts signed last month, increased 5.1 percent to 116.3, a level not seen since February 2006.

Economists polled by Reuters had forecast pending home sales rising 0.6 percent last month. Contracts usually become sales after a month or two.

The housing sector has steadily strengthened on the back of an economy near full employment and historically low mortgage rates."

June 8, 2016 - "President Obama vetoed an effort to roll back new rules intended to protect retirement savings Wednesday, solidifying his administration's regulations requiring investment advisers to look out for their clients' best interests.

"The Department of Labor's final rule will ensure that American workers and retirees receive retirement advice that is in their best interest, better enabling them to protect and grow their savings," Obama said in a veto message to Congress. "It is essential that these critical protections go into effect."

It was Obama's third veto this year, and the 10th of his presidency. Half of those vetoes have been on similar attempts to block his executive actions on issues like greenhouse gas emissions, clean water and union elections.

In this case, congressional Republicans had sought to use a rarely successful maneuver under the Congressional Review Act to overturn what's known as the fiduciary rule, a Department of Labor regulation prohibiting investment advisers from selling products with higher fees or lower returns just because they yield higher commissions.

Republicans said the rules would make it harder for lower- and middle-income workers and retirees to find investment advice because firms would have less incentive to cater to those markets."

June 9, 2016 - "The number of Americans filing for unemployment benefits unexpectedly fell last week, pointing to sustained strength in the labor market despite a sharp slowdown in hiring last month.

The report was the latest indication that the labor market remains strong even though the economy added only 38,000 jobs in May, the smallest gain since September 2010.

A report on Wednesday showed job openings hitting a nine-month high in April and layoffs falling to their lowest level since September 2014."

June 9, 2016 - "A Virginia man who says he joined and then defected from ISIS told U.S. investigators that he "gave himself" to the terrorist group and knew its goal is to destroy America, according to court papers.

A federal criminal complaint against Mohamad Jamal Khweis was unsealed Thursday, hours before he was to make his first appearance in an American courtroom.

Khweis, 26, is charged with providing material support to ISIS. He was taken into custody by Kurds in Iraq in March after he left the ISIS-held city of Mosul.

The complaint says that when Khweis was interrogated by U.S. investigators he told them he started researching ISIS — referred to as ISIL in court papers — before he left the United States in December 2015.

"During the interview, the defendant stated he 'gave himself' to ISIL and that they controlled him. The defendant stated he was aware that ISIL wants to attack and destroy the United States," the complaint says.

"The defendant stated that ISIL wants America to be taken over."

Investigators said when they examined Khweis' electronic devices, they found terrorist propaganda — including images of the World Trade Center burning on 9/11, and photos of ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi."

June 14, 2016 - "A U.S. appeals court on Tuesday upheld the Federal Communications Commission's landmark net neutrality rules, a big boost to the Obama administration and a blow to internet service providers in a ruling that could determine how consumers access content on the Internet.

A three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit ruled for the Obama administration on a 2-1 vote. The decision came in the latest battle over administration rules requiring broadband providers to treat all data equally, rather than giving or selling access to a so-called Web fast lane.

The ruling handed a major victory to the Obama administration, which had urged the FCC to approve sweeping rules in 2015, and boosts the FCC in its bid to complete action on several major rules before the end of the year."

July 8, 2016 - "The benchmark S&P 500 stock index traded above its record close on Friday as Wall $treet rallied after a much-larger-than-expected print in jobs growth confirmed the U.S. economy has regained speed after a first-quarter lull.

The S&P traded less than four points away from the all-time intraday high of 2,134.72 reached in May 2015.

After a dismal payrolls report for May that raised concerns about the health of the economy, employers added 287,000 jobs in June, beating market expectations for the first time in four months.

It’s good to see (the weak May number) was an anomaly, not a trend. That was the biggest worry coming into this, that last month’s weak number was starting a new normal in employment, and it didn’t," said J.J. Kinahan, chief strategist at TD Ameritrade in Chicago.

Some analysts said the strong jobs number could put an interest rate hike from the Federal Reserve back on the table, even as concerns linger over the global economic impact from Britain's vote last month to leave the European Union."

"The fewest Americans since 1973 filed for unemployment benefits last week, a sign that the U.S. labor market is getting tighter.

Jobless claims dropped by 19,000 to 235,000 in the week ended Nov. 12, which included the Veterans Day holiday, a Labor Department report showed Thursday in Washington. The median estimate in a Bloomberg survey called for an increase to 257,000. Continuing claims fell below 2 million to a 16-year low.

The biggest drop in initial claims since June suggests employers are loath to fire workers as the economy continues its modest expansion and the number of experienced applicants available for hiring remains limited. Filings for unemployment benefits have stayed below 300,000 for 89 straight weeks -- the longest streak since 1970 and a level typical for a healthy labor market."

"U.S. employers boosted hiring in November and the unemployment rate dropped to a more than nine-year low of 4.6 percent, making it almost certain that the Federal Reserve will raise interest rates later this month.

Nonfarm payrolls increased by 178,000 jobs last month after increasing by 142,000 in October, the Labor Department said on Friday. The solid employment gains likely reflect growing confidence in the economy, which has been marked by rising consumer spending and inflation.

The unemployment rate fell three-tenths of a percentage point last month, hitting its lowest level since August 2007, because more people found work as well as dropped out of the labor force. The decline in unemployment was concentrated among men.

The employment report joined reports on consumer spending, the housing market and manufacturing in suggesting the economy continued to gain momentum in the fourth quarter after output increased at its fastest pace in two years in the July-September period."

December 5, 2016

"U.S. service industries boosted production and hiring in November, the latest sign the economy is expanding at a solid pace after a weak first half of the year.

The Institute for Supply Management said Monday its index of non-manufacturing activity rose to 57.2 in November from 54.8 in October. A reading above 50 indicates sector expansion.

The service sector—a broad range of industries such as restaurants, accounting, barbers and real estate—represents most of the economy in the U.S. The sector struggled earlier in the year but has rebounded in recent months as consumers, benefiting from higher earnings and moderate inflation, spend steadily. Business spending also appears to be picking up, though it remains weak overall.

The data suggest “the economy’s largest sector is gaining momentum as we head into the final months of the year,” Lindsey Piegza, chief economist at Stifel Nicolaus & Co., said in a note to clients.

Ian Shepherdson, chief economist at Pantheon Macroeconomics, said the report, along with others on the labor market, suggests U.S. job growth will accelerate rapidly in early 2017.

Whether employers can find that many people each month is another question,” Mr. Shepherdson said in a note to clients. “If they cant, the upward pressure on wages will intensify.”

"U.S. single-family home price increases accelerated modestly in October, in line with expectations, but rising mortgage rates in recent weeks could pose a risk for the sustainability of the gains, a survey showed on Tuesday.

"Home prices and the economy are both enjoying robust numbers," said David M. Blitzer, managing director and chairman of the index committee at S&P Dow Jones Indices.

"However, mortgage interest rates rose in November and are expected to rise further as home prices continue to out-pace gains in wages and personal income," Blitzer said.

"With the current high consumer confidence numbers and low unemployment rate, affordability trends do not suggest an immediate reversal in home price trends. Nevertheless, home prices cannot rise faster than incomes and inflation indefinitely."
