Progressives Plan Huge Illinois Tax Hikes

Progressives Plan Huge Illinois Tax Hikes; Union Member on the "Fair Tax" Proposal

Via email, Ben VanMetre at the Illinois Policy Institute mentions huge tax hikes that Progressives are angling for. The tax hikes are so steep and so universal that even thinking union members are against the hikes.

From VanMetre

State Sen. Don Harmon and advocates for his progressive tax proposal argue that the progressive income tax will provide tax relief for Illinois’ middle class.

Not only is the argument not true, but the progressive income tax was never about tax relief. The proof of that is in the numbers.

Under Illinois law, the individual income tax rate will be 3.75% in 2015. Under the progressive tax-hike plan introduced by Sen. Harmon — and endorsed by A Better Illinois — a higher 4.9% applies to income earned after $12,500.

Under Harmon’s proposal, anyone with a taxable income of more than $22,000 will see their overall state tax bill increase. That plan targets Illinois’ working- and middle-class residents.

So why didn’t Harmon use the sunset rate (3.75%) for $12,500 in his rate structure?

The answer: because part of the progressive tax hike scheme is about making as much of the temporary tax hike permanent as possible while still calling it “tax relief.”

And that’s true for all of the popular progressive tax plans instructed in Illinois recently:

• State Rep. Naomi Jakobsson’s plan makes permanent the 5% rate on income earned above $36,000.

• The Center for Tax and Budget Accountability’s plan makes permanent the 5% rate on income earned above $5,000.

• Sen. Harmon’s plan makes permanent nearly all of the 5% rate on income earned above $12,500.

It’s time for taxpayers in Illinois to know the truth about the progressive income tax. It’s not about tax relief — it’s about making the temporary tax hike permanent and further increasing taxes on the middle class.

Everyone who makes more than $12,500 will see huge tax increases. Supposedly this is "fair".

No discussion of State income taxes is complete without consideration of property tax; state/local sales tax; various excise taxes and fees; and the level and quality of services provided by a particular State's government.

It's easy to cherry-pick data to suit one's agenda by ignoring all of the other factors.

When people vote for social, infrastructure, and other State programs ... they should be prepared to pay for them. Just like when people vote for a bloated military, wars, and corporate welfare they should be prepared to pay for those as well.

A lot of conservatives are like people who go to a restaurant & order a filet mignon dinner ... then whine when they bill comes & they didn't get fish sticks prices. At least liberals are honest & don't whine about the taxes that pay for the programs they voted for.

No discussion of state income tax is complete without consideration of the massive exodus

of tax payers from a fucked up donkey blue state and a collapse in the state's revenue.

God forbid Democrat legislators in Illinois should try & do the fiscally responsible thing.

{States with the highest and lowest tax burdens}

Illinois is ranked at #10 for the highest tax burden right now, I guess by "responsible thing" you mean they shouid go for #1.

Problem is that conservatives never ordered the filet. Liberals do and when conservatives have to pay for it, liberals scream "fair share!!!". The reason its easy for libs to pay for things is because its with other people's money.

If they truly wanted to do the fiscally responsible thing they'd eliminate all the wasteful and fraudulent spending they do on a daily basis with the tax payer's hard earned money.

That's fine & dandy going forward ... but the meal has already been ordered & eaten. Now it has to be paid for and the people of Illinois need to do the responsible thing.

Aren't conservatives always harping about fiscal responsibility? But when it's time to pay their fair share they start to shirk.

Then the people of Illinois should demand they enact the FAIRTAX.

The people of Illinois should demand their legislators & governor pass revenue legislation to pay for the programs the people voted for.

Is the "FairTax" the right way to go about it .... I don't know. But the fact is, if you wanna dance you gotta pay the piper.

I may disagree with some conservative programs (military spending, corporate welfare) my tax dollars go to pay for ... but I don't whine about the taxes I have to pay to pay for them.

Why in the hell would you disagree with military spending? Do you not realize that the military is the ONLY thing that keeps the world's wolf nations at bay?

Our military is bloated & much of it is at the behest of and serves only to profit the private sector defense industry.

"In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military–industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists, and will persist. We must never let the weight of this combination endanger our liberties or democratic processes. We should take nothing for granted. Only an alert and knowledgeable citizenry can compel the proper meshing of the huge industrial and military machinery of defense with our peaceful methods and goals so that security and liberty may prosper together." President Dwight D. Eisenhower (Republican)

You totally dont get it, dem legislators spend spend spend with no accountability and no controls, then they hike the tax rates unbelievably then lower it a little and praise themselves, they raise taxes because they overspend and make dumb decisions and the middleclass and low class people flit the bill.

ive never bought a steak and griped about the bill, i read the prices on the menu before i ordered.

We vote people into office and they have the responsibility to protect our tax money and spend it wisely but both partys waste money so badly its criminal.

We're all in this together.

If the government has spent money at the behest of duly elected legislators, it has to be paid for. You can't just choose to not pay for it.

It's called "fiscal responsibility" .... something conservatives seem to like to talk a lot about but rarely put into practice.

Maybe Illinois will turn a nice shade of red this fall. :)

Just another reason to have balanced budget laws.

If they spend it they must pay for it. Something politicians don't seem or want to comprehend.

If the right wants tax cuts, show us the surpluses that support that.

No, we are like the person who goes to a restaurant and orders a steak dinner and says why am i being charged for a loaf of bread, cheeseburgers, milk, bacon, eggs, pizza and healthcare for someone else? I only ordered a steak.

You also forget that the felet mignon they ordered was done so with their own money. You then expect them to not get what they paid for? Remember conservatives didn't vote for these programs. You liberals did.

Yeah at least democrats want to pay the bills.

but you keep adding more bills. How does that make sense? Conservatives want to pay the bills and then reduce the amount of bills we have. Lets pay what we promised right now and then reduce the number of bills we have. Is that a deal?

As you can read dems defend raising taxes. More people will leave Ill. More business will leave Ill. Less jobs in Ill. Less money in Ill. Eventually less money will come in to the gov. Toyota left cal. for Texas. Ill. should be thinking of cutting taxes to draw in business. CUT SPENDING.

It all depends on what you want for your city. If you want government or private services you must paybfor them. It all up to the voters.

That's true, some cities have made that decision. I'm not far from a very large city that is dying a slow but certain death due to the type of folks they put in office, problem is now they can't pay for what they voted for, money left town. The city was very close to losing the only good thing they have going for them by entertaining the thought of passing a tax similar to the inheritence tax, everyone knew what they had on their mind including the guy who it was aimed at, that idea was quickly squashed when he let them know real quick he would leave town if they passed such a tax. Fact is government can't force money to do a damn thing but leave, money doesn't like the rules they don't play or find another game.
