Ex-Christie Allies Devised Toll Hike Plan In Bid To Boost Governors Images

TRENTON, N.J. (CBSNewYork) Two Port Authority executives appointed by New Jersey Gov. Christie orchestrated a toll-hike plan in 2011 that was later scaled back to bolster the images of New Jerseys and New Yorks governors, according to published reports.

As WCBS 880′s Monica Miller reported, the toll hikes on Hudson River bridges and tunnels proposed in 2011 caused outrage by residents and some politicians. AAA New Yorks Robert Sinclair joined a loud chorus of opponents.

The process the Port Authority used to implement the toll hikes was rushed and lacked transparency with the authority holding all the public hearings on one day, Sinclair said at the time.

The Bergen County Record and The Newark Star-Ledger reported Sunday the plan was hatched to improve the images of Christie and New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo when they eventually scaled them back. For example, instead of a $6 hike that would bring the E-ZPass toll to $14 by 2014, the tolls are increasing by $4.50 over four years.

Both papers cited sources that the former Port Authority executive Bill Baroni and Dave Wildstein were the masterminds the secretive operation - the same two men who were allegeldy at the heart of the George Washington Bridge lane closures in Fort Lee last September. Both have since resigned.

One source told The Record that Christie instructed his aides at the Port Authority to float the higher number.

"It was all bullshit", a former Port Authority official told The Star-Ledger.

(...)

Assemblywoman Linda Stender, D-Scotch Plains, told Miller the reports do not come as much of a surprise to her. "This report confirms our worst suspicions, she said. We on the Transportation Committee started asking these questions over a year and a half ago when these toll increases went through, and we were never able to get straight answers. In fact, we werent able to get any answers at all, and thats really why the original supoenas were issued.

I was disgusted to read it. I thought this ought not to be this way. We have to get to the bottom of it. We have to get the answers. Everybody deserves to know the truth of whats gone on and how its been handled.

(...)

In September, a report by the Government Accountability Office concluded that the Port Authority didnt give the public enough opportunity to review and comment on the proposed increases.

Public hearings were held on one day, three days before the hikes were to take effect. The GAO report also found the Port Authority didnt provide the public with an adequate explanation the toll increases.

so like hicking up the price for a pair of jeans by 20% and then announcing a big sale with a 10% discount at a department store? that's Christie?

Sort of - but with more deceit and chest-beating.

Like threatening to raise the price a lot, then lying that SOMEONE ELSE was about to hike the price a lot, but you heroically prevented them from doing it.

Where's your outrage for Obama when he knew people would lose their healthcare plans but continued to repeat his lie for three more years? Or Hillary's cavalier response to the deaths in Benghazi? Or Obama adding $10Trillion to the national debt in 5 years?

Do you really think that raising tolls on a fucking bridge rises to a level above that of the assholes that you helped put in office?

Gov. Chris Christie has another Port Authority scam to explain, this time over the killer toll hikes at the Hudson River crossings that he approved in the summer of 2011.

At the time, the governor expressed shock that the Port Authority would dare to propose roughly doubling the tolls over a few years.

Now we learn it was all an act. According to six people who worked at the Port Authority that summer, Christie knew about the toll hikes in advance. In a tawdry bit of political theater, he and New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo got the Port Authority to inflate its initial request so they could trim it down to size and appear to be champions of hard-pressed commuters.

“It was all bulshit,” one of the sources told the Star-Ledger’s Steve Strunksy.

Christie is refusing to discuss it. But the legislative committee investigating the Port Authority has issued subpoenas, so we will eventually hear the grisly details.

(...)

The Port Authority has become a piggy bank that both governors use for pet projects with minimal accountability.

Those projects are expensive, and help explain why New Jersey motorists will be paying an obscene cash toll of $15 to cross the Hudson by the end of 2015.

The political benefit to Christie is enormous. He grabbed $1.8 billion of Port Authority money that had been set aside for the ARC tunnel under the Hudson, then used it to fund his own transit projects. That’s allowed him to avoid raising the gas tax.

But should the Port Authority be straying so far from its core mission, to improve interstate transportation? Why is this secretive agency financing the Pulaski Skyway project? And why is it spending so much money on real estate?

“It’s a slush fund,” says Assemblyman John Wisniewski (D-Middlesex), chairman of the investigative committee.

Bridgegate didn't have much of a shelf life. Damn that Putin!

A solid effort is being made to try and churn up the water, even if that means tagging other 'scandals' on with 'stuck-on-a-bridge' gate. Seems like there's little interest at this point.

Maybe Chris Matthews can dedicate a segment for his 100K viewers.

It's just sad when nobody cares, but we'll remember Bridgegate for as long as we can!
