Pentagon Set to Slash Military to Pre-World War II LevelsBy Tracy Connor and Jim Miklaszewski

Firing the opening salvo in a bloody budget battle, the U.S. Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel is set to recommend drastic cuts of billions of dollars that would take U.S military forces to levels not seen since before World War II.

The cuts in military spending, forces and weapons programs address the stark reality of growing budget pressures at home and point to improbability that the United States will ever again engage in a large ground war.

The plan, to be unveiled Monday afternoon, is likely to face stiff opposition on Capitol Hill, where lawmakers will battle for every troop, weapons program and dollar.

"We must be pragmatic. We can't escape tough choices."

The proposal calls for the Army to be cut to about 450,000 troops, down from a peak of 570,000 after the Sept. 11 attacks. Troop levels were already slated to drop to 480,000 — but now even more are on the chopping block.

Hagel also wants to eliminate the fleet of A-10 "tank killer" aircraft, designed in the 1970s to go after targets on the ground. Sen. Kelly Ayotte, R-N.H., whose husband was an A-10 pilot, has already vowed to fight plans to retire the plane.

Also slated for retirement is the U-2 spy plane, the stalwart of Cold War reconnaissance. The military is turning to new methods of surveillance, like the Global Hawk.

Pentagon officials have also made clear that growth in military pay and benefits will also have to be trimmed, but it’s unlikely there would be any reduction in current pay scales or benefits already earned.

Navy Rear Adm. John Kirby, the Pentagon press secretary, told the Associated Press that Hagel worked closely with military service chiefs on the proposal.

"He has worked hard with the services to ensure that we continue to stand for the defense of our national interests — that whatever budget priorities we establish, we do so in keeping with our defense strategy and with a strong commitment to the men and women in uniform and to their families," Kirby said.

"But he has also said that we have to face the realities of our time. We must be pragmatic. We can't escape tough choices. He and the chiefs are willing to make those choices."

I'm glad. As long as we can defend ourselves in the 21st century, let someone else spend their fortunes and lives defending the world. From what I can see, the world has been most ungrateful and we have evolved into nothing more than a buttinsky country. Let Great Britain defend itself. Let Japan defend itself. Let South Korea defend itself. And Afghanistan? Herding cats. Bring our troops home.

Yeah... you have so many beardy enemies... ho ho ho

comedy gold that this peasant thinks his US dictators would defend other countries.

Let me tell you little peasants.

The US defence budget will NEVER be decreased.

As soon as the american public question why they spend more than the other 200 countries on planet earth combined..... they will simply carry out another false flag attack ....a la 911.

Then the peasants will happily give all their money to defend themselves against imaginary enemies.

Here's Hagal in 2005 in an address to the Institute of Politics at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government:

The Europeans, our European allies in Nato, most every one of them...have been going this way [down] with their defense budgets. We did that for the first six years of the 90‘s--because what was the threat? The Soviet Union had imploded, there was no evil in the world left, boundless opportunities for democracy as far as the eye can see. What was the threat? Well, for six years, we cut our defense budget, we cut our intelligence community budget, and we even cut our State Department budget...So we brought some of this (BAC - War On Terror, Iraq, etc) on ourselves. It teaches us a good lesson about the world--a lesson we continue to learn, generation after generation.

So is Hagel really now doing what he believes or what's he's been ordered to by Obama?

And what's really odd is why we'd do this when there isn't peace or a prospect for peace.

Is Obama unaware that terrorists are still threatening all across the globe, Iraq is destabilizing, Afghanistan is a mess, Iran is threatening, North Korea is threatening, China is expanding and threatening, and things in the the former Soviet Union are highly unstable? There is not likely to be a reduced demand for US forces.

Indeed, Obama just issued a warning to Russia not to send it's troops into the Ukraine. And he's going to cut our military?

Mark my words. This is a prescription for disaster. He's a fool. It's the same logic of those wanting to rid the world of nuclear weapons.

The truth is most every time the US has done this sort of thing, we laid the seeds for the next war. A strong US military has made the world a much better place the past century. It defeated the Nazis, Japanese, Communism, and a host of petty but dangerous tyrants. It's hard to imagine a world where the US was not the biggest military power. It will not be anywhere near as nice. Stupidly, we look only at the cost of maintaining defense, not at the cost of not maintaining it.

You do have a point, even if you are from a country that hasn't been able to defend themselves since the era of Queen Victoria. The defence (sic) budget will be decreased when there is no longer any money left to borrow to FUND it.

There is going to be dollars not going into local economies.. soldiers not going to burger kings..

I assume that people will be discharged?? i.e layed off.. More people competing for the few jobs there are

This is not good for the economy right now.

I think this will be a good thing. Other countries are spending 5% of their federal budgets on the military; we are spending 50%. The money spent on the military could be better used on jobs programs, education, healthcare, etc. That will do more for the economy, and jobs, than blowing our money on fighter jets.

We aren't responsible for the world.

And we did all that without a large pre-WWII standing army.

Correct, a lot of Americans tend to forget that the English speak English.

And a lot of English tend to forget who bailed them out of two bloody wars.

Other countries are spending 5% of their federal budgets on the military; we are spending 50%.

Wow! You are dumber than I even thought. :D

And we forget that we sat on the sidelines while they fought the Nazis for years before we got there.

With Lend-Lease equipment. Americans in 1939-1940 were very anti-war and any student of history has not forgotten that. The younger folk didn't forget, they were never taught.

Oh that's right. A Democratic President the left deeply admires did that. :D

Actually FDR tried every trick in the book to get us involved including Lend-Lease.

The military wasn't ever intended to be a fking jobs program.

Now, now ... recent presidents have proven that a president doesn't need much of an excuse or public concurrence to get US soldiers involved in a shooting wars against someone whe doesn't like. :)

That is true but we were talking about FDR so...now now! Probably the best example of latter-day Presidents and involvement is LBJ and the Vietnam War. We apparently never learned our lesson there.

Skews, we already know you are as dumb as a rock.

No need to provide further proof.

Here's your clue.

budget-defense.jpg

And here's a detail breakdown of the 2013 actuals.

http://www.usfederalbudget.us/federal_budget_estimate_vs_actual_2013

Notice that Defense is $821 billion and the total actuals (which was less that the budget) was $3454 billion.

Now do the math. Is that anywhere near 50%? No.

And I am pleased Obama has shown restraint on that authority

He hasn't shown restraint. Look at his illegal and unpopular use of force in Libya.
