RichClem
More than any other individual, Reagan won the Cold War and defeated genocidal Communism forever. While liberals slept, or bitterly opposed him. Book Review: 'Maximalist' by Stephen SestanovichReagan's warm personal friendship with Gorbachev was legendary. But the Gipper conceded little of substance in their talks.....Another lesson of Mr. Sestanovich's book is that diplomatic engagement with U.S. enemies is a fool's errand unless it's aimed at achieving a deeper strategic purpose. Take Ronald Reagan's personal diplomacy with Mikhail Gorbachev. Progressives today point to that diplomacy to defend their own concessions to U.S. adversaries. But such thinking, Mr. Sestanovich suggests, misses the essence of Reagan's strategy. For Reagan, the author writes, the purpose of engagement "was to get others to see issues at hand 'though my eyes.' Until they did so, he was not prepared to compromise America's competitive position. (Once they did, of course, compromise became less necessary.)" Thus, while Reagan's relationship with Mr. Gorbachev grew ever warmer, particularly in his second term, the Gipper gave up almost nothing substantive in their talks. Most issues, from the deployment of Pershing missiles in Europe to the fate of Soviet dissidents, were "resolved in exactly the same way: the Soviets folded, and the Americans prevailed."....After a decade of American drift, Reagan came to office with a new formula: "We win, they lose," the president told an aide early on. The simplicity of this one-liner masked its profundity. The Cold War was no longer something to be "managed" but a moral conflict with a zero-sum outcome. "No previous president had imagined the decisive outcome that he did," the author writes. "Reagan proposed success."http://online.wsj.com/news/articles/SB10001424052702303442704579362992407435838?mod=WSJ_Opinion_LEFTTopOpinion
Fallopian
We won and they lost. That is what liberals don't like. We were not supposed to win. We are the bad guys. We are the imperialists. The Soviets had wonderful intentions. They just had some bad leaders. Communism really will work if you just get the right people to lead us. am I doing leftist propaganda right? nuckin futz
Give it a rest, Rich! You keep dredging up the same old tired threads you started years ago and have taken severe beatings on. The Reagan mythology is a dead horse! You cannot regain former imagined glory here on NHB, because everyone knows you are an extremely partisan RW, who only drinks from the poisoned well of nutbaggery. You lost all credibility years ago, if you ever had any.

The old Bolshevik communist model does not work, and has been rejected in favor of "free trade Globalist slavery" models based upon renegade capitalism of the Kleptocracy. The USSR collapsed because of the weight of its huge military, with a busted budget, empty store shelves, and workers too hungover to go to work. nuckin futz
it's a real shame that reagan's words didn't match his actions. he was a great liar. But a good enough actor to make it sound believable. Actors are, after all, liars! Reagan had good speech writers. He made a career as Cal governor bashing heads and shooting hippies on college campuses during the 60's, and got the "white flight" voters all aflame. He kinda copied Nixon in those regards, and George Wallace. It was the "war on the youth" of America, Archie Bunker in action! The Manson trial, and Altamount Rock festival riot really helped the Rethugs! Fascist brutality and hate is a powerfull cocktail! Ok, Lew, cross out "fascist"! hehe

johndnorth
Libs hate Reagan because they love communism. Uncle Joe is a hero to the fellow travelers. Libs follow the program. One payer medical, No freedom for the press, NSA listening to everyone. no dissension in college, dumbing down the population. The fact that the government in Russia killed tens of millions of their own people is no big deal. You have to break some eggs to make an omelet. It takes a village. What difference, at this point, does it make?
Hex2
LMAO Reagan Won the Cold War. That's funny chit Nancy propped him in his chair and let him eat Jelly Beans while he wondered who all the men were that were on his staff! Fugger was clueless. RichClem
Reagan benefits from the cold war and fifty years of work by many presidents from both parties. Reagan Had very little to do with the fall of communism. its a failed form of government. Astounding the ignorance of liberals. It was a failed form of government for how many decades as it expanded its power around the world? Besides, liberals at the time were denying it was a failure, claiming its economy was strong. When conservatives like Reagan claimed otherwise, liberals attacked him viciously.
