Some facts about beer.

Recommended Posts

Here now the next time you go to a bar you can sound like a beersnob like me.

  • Beer has been brewed since at least 3,000BCE, but it may have been as far back as 10,000 BCE. Ancient Sumarans made beer and they called it "Kaas" which roughly translates as "What the mouth desires." We know this because there are ancient tablets detailing their brewing recipes.
  • First professional brewers were women; in Peru only women were allowed to brew beer and in ancient Egypt there was a law prohibiting men from brewing and selling beer.
  • The pilgrims stopped at Plymouth Rock for a very specific reason; beer. One passenger writes in his journal "We could not now take time for further search or consideration; our victuals being much spent, especially our beere." Yeah, they spelt beer differently back then.
  • All beer has 4 main ingredients; water, a source of starch (Rice, wheat, etc), barley, and finally yeast. Water accounts for over 90% of all beers so the kind of water used greatly influences the flavor.
  • The barley used in beer is a close relative of cannabis, yup you read that right, marijuana. So close in fact that they have been hybridized. Where one can grow barley, one can grow marijuana.
  • There are two types of beers: Ales and Lagers
  • Ale- Yeast that is fermented at the top.
  • Lager- Yeast that is fermented at the bottom. Lagers are also brewed at much lower temperatures than Ales.
  • Pale Lagers are the most popular beers in the world, Coors, Budweiser, and many others are actually Pale Lagers. The most popular Lager on the globe is a Chinese beer called "Snow Beer".
  • Pilsners are an Ale (Think Heineken), the name comes where it was invented in Pilsen, in the Czech Republic.
  • Indian Pale Ales--famous for their bitter taste--were not invented in India, it was created in Europe in the 1700s by the East Indian Trading Company so they could have a beer that would survive the trip to India.
  • Cream Ales differ from most Ales in that the brewing process involves cold temperatures.
  • Stouts and Brown Ales--while called heavy by drinkers--typically have the fewest calories and lower alcohol content than most beers. A 12oz glass of Guinness is a mere 176 calories, less than a typical candy bar.
  • The White House brews and makes its own beer, a recipe is available on the web.
  • FDR ended prohibition but it was Jimmy Carter who legalized homebrewing in 1978; probably his greatest achievement in office.
  • Washington, Jefferson, and Adams were famous beer brewers.
  • Benjamin Franklin is quoted as saying "Beer is proof God loves us and wants us to be happy." Of course this is a misquote on the internet, the real quote is "Behold the rain which descends from heaven upon our vineyards; there it enters the root of the vines, to be changed into wine, a constant proof that God loves us, and loves to see us happy."
  • In spite popular belief, it is not illegal for a beer commercial to feature someone drinking beer.
  • Most people believe that time or temperature makes a beer skunky, the real culprit is sunlight.
  • Famous books and/or documents written in whole or in part in a bar or pub:

Harry Potter

Declaration of Independence

The play A Few Good Men.

Beer seems to make me sing and play better, I've never had anyone say that but I can just tell. I drink Ales and Lager both but prefer Lager, I've got a buddy that drinks his beer at room temp.
