Republicans To Kick 170,000 Veterans Off Of SNAP Program

Republicans will salute America's veterans Monday, while simultaneously trying to deny them benefits.

In addition to reducing housing aid, and denying health care to vets, the GOP is also trying to remove thousands of vets from the food stamp program, known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP.

At least 900,000 veterans rely on SNAP. The House Republican version of the farm bill, the five-year piece of legislation that funds nutrition and agriculture provisions, would slash funding for the food stamps program by nearly $40 billion and boot 2.8 million people off the program next year.

That includes 170,000 veterans, who would be removed through a provision in the bill that would eliminate food stamps eligibility for non-elderly jobless adults who can't find work or an opening in a job training program.

CHARTS: The Hidden Benefits of Food Stamps.

Veterans returning home from service have more trouble finding work than other folks, and rely more heavily on the food stamp program. The unemployment rate for recent veterans—those who have served in the past decade—is about 10 percent, almost 3 points above the national unemployment rate. War-related disabilities are one reason why. About a quarter of recent veterans reported service-related disabilities in 2011. Households that have a disabled veteran who is unable to work are twice as likely to lack access to sufficient food than households without a disabled service member, according to the nonprofit Center on Budget and Policy Priorities.

This month, SNAP funding was reduced by $5 billion as extra stimulus money for the program expired. While the Senate will never approve the $40 billion in further cuts to the food stamps program that House Republicans want, deeper cuts are pretty much inevitable.

The two chambers are in the middle of negotiating a final version of the farm bill, which will contain food stamp reductions somewhere in between the $4 billion level the Senate wants and the level the Republicans want.

Whatever the final number, veterans will likely feel the pinch.

fact out today that republicans shipped 50,000 US factories and 16,000,000 jobs to china

since 1994 with nafta and now want to ship even more with the latest TPP bill being rammed

through congress without even anyone reading it.

Then, azzhole republicans complain when vets are on food stamps with no jobs.

And yet, all the time, republicans give welfare subsidies to large landowners to NOT grow

food and just sit on their fat welfare queen azzes.

IF that were not enough, paul ryan and republicans want to take away social security and

give that money to wall street brokers and banks and insurance companies to gamble with

like when they crashed the stock market and the dow from 14000 to 7000 in 2007 and 2008.

Then, repukes lie to their moron repuke base about insurance so they can keep enriching

insurance companies who deny coverage fraudulently as they have for decades.

Republicans To Kick 170,000 Veterans Off Of SNAP Program

You posted this same crap yesterday and had your ass handed to you.

This isn't being done by Republicans, it's Obama's fault.

http://nypost.com/2013/11/11/obama-takes-from-kids-dinners-to-fund-michelles-project/

On Nov. 1, sizable cuts were gouged into the federal food-stamp program (or, as it’s now called, SNAP, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program), which feeds 47.6 million people, or nearly one in six Americans. In the city, 1.9 million folks get the bulk of their Jell-O and Campbell’s Soup from stamps.

But news has spread among the poor, like leafy green vegetables, that it wasn’t heartless Republicans who triggered the cuts.

Rather, some of the food-stamp cash was snatched to pay for Michelle Obama’s pet project, Let’s Move. What?

It’s come to this. Some 76 million meals a year will vanish from this city — poof! — partly because the president diverted money from SNAP to the first lady’s signature program, part of her Let’s Move anti-obesity initiative — the bean-sprout-heavy, $4.5 billion Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act.

The rest of the $5 billion annual food-stamp cuts was taken when 2009 stimulus funds dried up. But with ObamaCare woes stealing the oxygen in Washington, there’s little urgency to replace dandelion greens served on recyclable trays with family-friendly buttered mashed potatoes.

You don't learn too quickly, do you?

This is simply a fact, the Dems are responsible... But remarkably, they continue to tell the lie and hope someone believes them.

Pathetic Democrats, still blaming Republicans for their failures.

Considering your stunning lack of success, what alternative do you have?

The funding for that program has nothing to do with repubs cutting snap for veterans. Nice try though.

Sorry dumbass, but the Republicans didn't cut snap for veterans. Nice try though.

You should try google and reading...it's fun! Fact: Repub cuts to the farm bill is 10x larger than the cuts passed by the Dems.

A bill passed by the republican-controlled House of Representatives would cut $4 billion a year in food stamps. The bill passed by the democrat-controlled Senate asks for $400 million in yearly cuts.

At $49,000 per second, it would be nice to see Obies debt cut. Think of how many more freebies that could be used for.

This is part of the great divide. You folks want to spend, spend, spend - with no regard to debt and what it shoulders future generations with. I can think of numerous places we need to do some serious cutting, yet both sides of the aisle want to keep "their" folks from feeling the ax.

Seems to be a never ending cycle these days. Alot of talk and blathering on both sides, yet the only thing to show for it is record deficits. Nothing like kicking the can down the road in the pursuit of the race to the bottom and screwing over the future.

The sorry fact for you, is that those "republican cuts" never happened. That why you said "would cut".

Why do liberals intentionally misrepresent the facts? Because they can't win an argument when the whole truth is known.
