If you’re as tired of the Republican Party inciting hatred between family members and neighbors as I am, then this will make your day.

Congressional candidate and Army veteran Jason Thigpen was formerly a Republican, seeking election to the U.S. House in North Carolina’s 3rd Congressional District, running against Republican Representative Walter Jones. But Thigpen switched parties yesterday. He is now running as a Democrat.

Thigpen said, “Enough is enough. After discussing it with my wife and family, I’ve decided to run as a Democrat rather than a Republican. I simply cannot stand with a Party where its most extreme element promote hate and division amongst people.”

Mr. Thigpen says his platform won’t change. He’s just divorcing himself from hate. “The government shutdown was simply the straw that broke the camels back. I guess being an American just isn’t good enough anymore and I refuse to be part of an extremist movement in the GOP that only appears to thrive on fear and hate mongering of anyone and everyone who doesn’t walk their line.”

Thigpen says he’s received a lot of support from other North Carolina Republicans, and that the vast majority of Republicans don’t agree with these “radical nut-jobs”.

Thigpen asks what so many of us ask, “Regardless of Party affiliation, we should be able to agree and agree to disagree on issues, and still go out for coffee or dinner afterwards. To think anyone can despise, loath, insult, and threaten another American simply because of their Party affiliation is almost depressing.”

He reminds us all that party affiliation should not mean that we hate someone of another party, “I mean, how many Democrats or Republicans entire families are registered with the same Party? So if your mother, father, brother, or sister are registered with a different Party would you disown them? Would you wish harm on them? Would you choose to no longer celebrate holidays with them? Would you no longer love them? These are the real questions that need answering before continuing the debate because when did being an American just no longer matter?”

Thigpen, an Army veteran who received a Purple Heart, is not impressed with his past party’s efforts to steal the right to vote from Democrats, “I didn’t go to war to defend the liberties and freedoms of one Party, race, sex, or one income class of Americans. Whether white, black, Hispanic, Asian, man, woman, gay, lesbian, straight, rich, or poor – we fought together as equals, side-by-side for the benefit of every American in the same.

So, to come home from serving our country and see North Carolina legislators using their super-majority status to gerrymander districts and pass a law to deliberately suppress and oppress the voting rights of Democrats but more specifically minorities and college students, is absolutely deplorable.”

Thigpen observed unhappily his party’s attempts to use unrelated bills to restrict women’s access to abortions and then at the same time deny food and healthcare to babies. He is not impressed with the lack of Christian values evinced in such deplorable behavior.

The final straw was the Republican shutdown, which Thigpen notes was “real patriotic”. He said, “Shutting down the government was seemingly easy for our elected Representatives, as they’re not adversely affected with their pay being protected by the Constitution. They were some real patriots though, huh? These so called Representatives sat around in Washington playing chicken with their constituent’s lives all while patting each other on the back saying ‘great job.’ Yeah that’s real patriotic all right.”

Thigpen, who now calls himself a conservative Democrat, can thank his party’s southern strategy and their loudest mouthpieces like Rush Limbaugh for creating a country where Republicans absolutely loathe liberals and Democrats.

It may be that Thigpen saw a crowded Republican field and decided he had a better shot as a Democrat (oddly Walter Jones was once a Democrat). After all, former Bush aide Taylor Griffin is challenging incumbent Republican Walter Jones from the right, running as a “real conservative”. Walter Jones is known for voting for the Iraq war but later demanding apologies for being lied to.

Mother Jones reported:

Then the chairman called on Rep. Walter B. Jones. Glaring at the witness, Jones quoted a statement from Perle’s testimony suggesting that the administration had been misled in its assessment of Iraq by “double agents planted by the regime.” The congressman’s voice quavered as he demanded an apology to the country. “It is just amazing to me how we as a Congress were told we had to remove this man, but the reason we were given was not accurate.”

Whatever motivated Thigpen, the country needs more Republicans standing up to their party’s hatred and saying no more.

This is the third one this week I've seen jump off the sinking republican ship.

There will be more.

I'm the Democrat in a family that's been mainly Repubs but they ain't at ALL happy with the Tea Bags...a bunch of haters, dumb puppets and nasty bullies looking for victims they can abuse. Bullies often are themselves plenty flawed and vulnerable. This is no differnt.

Here ... a MODERATE can run as a Dem and win. Ohio has big patches that are "Red" but they ain't naturally Tea Types. Honor, integrity, REAL patriotism......COMMON SENSE...still matter. If the Moderate Repubs can turn the tables on the Teas...take back the leadership...then the GOP can bounce back. Otherwise it's gonna be the Koch millions, various sociopath haters and the brainwashing done by the Hater media gang.

Crist is gonna knock out Scott for Gov in FLA.

Wait until next year. As the brick wall the clown car is heading towards at a high rate of speed grows closer, the ones with any sense will be changing their tune if not their party on a lot of issues. Hardcore cons never change their tune, they double down on stupid. It's worked for them in the past because there was plenty of stupid. Those numbers are dwindling, unlike that soldier who is obviously more intelligent than his affiliations. It will be difficult for the cons going forward as the collective intelligence has now started leaving them behind. As my father once told me, "if you're going to be stupid you better be tough".

He will fit in....he's an opportunist

So standing for fairness, freedom of the vote to all, being concerned that the tail of the Republican party is wagging the dog by demanding utter fealty to restrictive, lockstep points of view that include taking money from the poor and giving it to the rich, while threatening other Republicans if they don't toe the same line -- that's being "opportunistic"? Don't you believe there are actually some principled people out there?

Obama has made stunningly ugly hateful comments about Repubs.

Never saw you complain about that, troll.

He doesn't hold a candle in the hate department to the Tea Party or to Tea Party supporters on this board. Tell me what he's said that matches calling him a ape or a n-----, or going all the way to the bottom and calling his wife and children whores!

A friend of mine wrote a novel. The first month he had a dozen sales. Within two or three months he was selling, and continues to sell, 1000-2000 a month. Guess he should have taken it off Amazon after that disappointing first month, huh?

Hmmmm...were you born with a soft spot on your head that never healed?

Why is it that hardliners look down their noses at people who actually follow the Christian principles of love, forebearance, sacrifice, who don't respond to everything they don't like with hate? Do you know why industrial hemp can't be grown in the US? It's a relative of the kind you smoke, only it would take 100 joints of industrial hemp to get high. For this reason, legislators have refused to let us grow this extremely useful plant for fear of being called "soft on drugs." Any president or legislator who's suggested eliminating waste in the military was automatically called "soft on communism," and today, of course, it's "soft on terrorism." And we built a machine that took us to the moon. Guess we're smart in some areas and not too bright in others, huh?

What a shameless liar you are.

Show me where I said that Tea Partiers officially made such proclamations. We're talking about what individuals think, not the public positions of their organizations.

Millions of Americans demonstrated with a single example of what you claimed.

F*** you and your endless lies and smears.

That wasn't hateful. I was looking for a rational explanation.

Your friend wrote a (presumably) good novel that nobody had heard of. Through word of mouth about how good it was, it has began to pick up steam, and sell.

obamacare has been advertised about how great it is for years. Its advertising budget, you couldn't possibly put a price tag on. Probably billions. With obamacare, the more people learn, the worse it gets...plus, nobody is forcing sales of your friend's book on the public.

You got a link? Cause I think you're a lying cunt. Too much hate?

No you wouldn't. You're trying to get me to show by inaction that it doesn't exist. And Isabel has a point. I don't trust you.

I agree that that's not a good word to call a woman...unless you're Sarah Palin or Michelle Bachman.

No, you can't call them that name either. There is still such a thing as human dignity, and there will always be people too stupid or uncaring to respect it.

Thank you, and agreed. I appreciate your consistency.

We're so politically-crazed that we forget what's really important. I couldn't stand Ronald Reagan's politics, I hated them, but I cried for him and his family when I found out he had Alzheimer's. Politics is nothing in the face of human frailty, disease, unfortunate circumstances, divorce, kidnaped children. The list is long and terrible.

Lisa - don't tell him. You know how cons love to violate people's privacy as retaliation.

She can't tell me because she is a fucking liar....she always has "a friend" to prove her position.
