GOP To Get Away From Tea Party Politics For 2014 And Beyond

The GOP has wised up and begun to work on distancing itself from Tea Party politics, and heading back towards the center of the political spectrum. Cartoon by Daryl Cagle via Cagle Comics.

The GOP is starting to look for ways to distance itself from the Tea Party for the 2014 elections. According to the National Journal, the GOP’s new plan to combat Tea Party politics includes the following strategies:

  • Running attack ads against Tea Party candidates
  • Getting rid of Ron Paul’s protégés in states like Minnesota and Iowa
  • Having open primary elections instead of nominating conventions
  • Taking on Tea Party groups such as Heritage Action and FreedomWorks
There’s no bi-partisanship or compromise in Tea Party politics.

Tea Party politics doesn’t include bi-partisanship and compromise. They think these are the very things that will tear the nation apart. They have been very vocal that any Republican who compromises with Democrats will face a primary challenge.

These threats have been a big part of why the GOP has been running scared until now. During the shutdown, Tim Huelskamp (R-KS) said that no Republican in the House could vote for the Senate’s plan to reopen the government, because to do so would mean a primary challenge. This is some of Tea Party politics at work.

Republicans see Tea Party politics as the reason the GOP is in trouble.

Establishment Republicans, however, blamed Tea Party darling Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) for the shutdown. Sen. Cruz is a major player in Tea Party politics in Congress. In fact, he’s been such a leader that he’s been sticking his nose into House business to keep those Tea Partiers in line. Establishment Republicans are sick of that, and of his hardline stance. Grover Norquist is sick of him. Even Ken Cuccinelli, the GOP’s hardline candidate for governor of Virginia, put distance between himself and Sen. Cruz.

Congressman Peter King, who’s been known for saying stupid stuff, also blamed Sen. Cruz for the shutdown. He made it clear before the government shut down that Sen. Cruz should be blamed if it actually happened.

Polls repeatedly show that Americans blame the GOP for the shutdown and debt ceiling mess. A CNN poll earlier this week showed that more than half of Americans think it’s bad that the GOP runs the House. Business groups are dropping Tea Party candidates. Polls earlier this month showed that the shutdown could hand control of the House back over to the Democrats. And polls also show the GOP has its lowest approval rating in history; a Washington Post/ABC poll showed their approval rating was just 32% two days ago. Other polls have shown it even lower. The Tea Party’s ratings aren’t particularly good either. Most of this is thanks to Tea Party politics.

From a Republican perspective, this is very bad news. The National Journal piece says that part of the GOP’s new plan uses Karl Rove’s Crossroads super-PAC. They want to vet GOP candidates carefully so the most viable candidate is the one that Democrats face in general elections. Crossroads spokesman Jonathan Collegio said, “We want to avoid situations like 2010 with (Delaware Republican nominee) Christine O’Donnell, where a candidate gains momentum and the skeletons come out after the primary. If skeletons exist, we’ll make every effort to make sure they’re known to every group that spends money long before the primary.”

Tea Party politics is part of why their voter outreach agenda isn’t working.

After being shocked in 2012, the GOP released an “autopsy report” that was supposed to show them better ways to connect with voters. For instance, according to the project’s information, they’re supposed to help keep people from depending on the government too much. At the same time, they’re also supposed to help make sure the government works for those truly in need. It calls low-income Americans “hardworking people who want to become hard-working middle-income Americans.” That sounds great. But Tea party politics includes being so afraid of big government that they seem to want no government at all. At least the establishment GOP recognizes that government has a place, even if it’s a small place, in people’s lives.

They’re starting to wise up, however. The GOP’s new plan to get away from Tea Party politics in light of the public’s poor views involves showing the moderate, establishment GOP to be the more reasonable segment. Their goal is something to root for. America is in very bad shape thanks to the Tea Party’s antics over the last two years.

Good luck. You would think they could get lots of moneyed support for this. Chamber has to be fed up about now. Reading deeper into the article, though, it seems too small. $8 million isn't enough to knock out the Tea Party. They need wider support.

The GOP doesn't want them anymore. Does that mean they're not patriots, now, since you think the Tea Partiers are?

Do you embrace the TP's scorched earth attitude toward anyone who even minimally disagrees with them? You think that's good for this nation?

Is this an insult, by the way?

The GOP has always been anti-TEA Party and have funded encumbants against TEA Party primary candidates.
It's funny that liberals have not understood that the TEA Party was NEVER part of the GOP, but that they were fighting it from within.

The GOP doesn't want them anymore.

What the Obamatrons don't understand is that the GOP NEVER wanted them.

But that didn't stop them from becoming a force within the party, and it won't stop them now because the TEA Party represents what Conservationism has always been about: Small government and a constitutional form of government.

The GOP has for years been nothing more than Dim light, so of course they oppose the TEA Party.

Because it has nothing to do with what the baggers stand for! It's their tactics. If you don't get your way, you bargain or compromise. If that doesn't work, you raise money, have a popular argument, and get your guys elected. You don't burn down the government because you don't get your way. That's why the baggers are going down!

Oh, we aren't afraid of the Tea Party...that's why we have been obsessing over it so much

Tea is on the march again like it was in 2010...you better be afraid

It reveals the labyrinth of corruption in party politics administrating every social order's institutional ideology selling franchises to character matters and genders are worth less if they do not pick a side to defend incomplete conjecture based upon mutually accepted theories and or theologies time changes space.

Nobody of social identity wants to know what real is in plain sight so they save any excuse of denial whether it be academic, political, religious/spiritual, or economic where led bullets make gold payable on demand saving societal evolution from returning to being just homo sapien ancestry replacing themselves with added ancestors as conceived now.

Ideology is methodology in making everyone else agree to not want to know self containment or self evident. Paths of least resistance orchestrated with no win scenarios of damned if you do and damned if you don't.

Title doesn't matter when the chain of command operates the same way in every ideology top down charges everyone bottom up to pay to play social justification in the art of pretending to be smarter than instincts, intellectually.

Conceptual rules conception but without conception there are no bodies to conceptualize where humanity goes passing through this atmosphere. Extinction created by selling doubt real only originates from beyond the moment and reality cannot survive being one moment all the time space never adds into the same details twice functioning the same way all the time..

It would be a tragedy :) if the tee-hatters split off and formed a third party. :D

cc

Whatever third party Jesse Ventura will run under will gladly siphon off people sick and tired of the two party crapfest we have to put up with, and that is a HUGE amount of folks! A splintered Rethug Party would be a GODSEND, and Jesse can clean up the broken pieces of liars and criminals, and get this nation back to "we, the people" again!

There's the Mark of the Troll. :D

Come on, how did you forget to use the word "phony" about the IRS scandal?

What, the DNC programming didn't take? :D

And Rahm Emmanuel's brother who helped write Obamacare has specifically endorsed death panels, which are an integral part of the plan under "cost saving."

Sorry granny, you don't get your treatment. We're "cost saving."

Even Obama acknowledged that publicly.

You Dem liberals should be aware that the Dem party is broken too.

And that Maobama is NOT a liberal, he is NWO, and that the Dem party is rife will Zionist sellouts to Isreal who are in line with the PNAC Neocon War Machine, and scumbags like Chuck Schumer who protect the Wall street criminals from justice, and send jobs and plants overseas. And the dems are ready to roll back SS benefits, and cave in to Rethug demands like bama always does!

In the real world, they are all shills for the 1% elite, because that's where all the bribery $$ come from!

In your hearts, you know I am right!

The GOP will never be able to shake off the TEA Baggers, they are all controlled by the same elitist white racist masters.

That's very true!

Their fingerprints are all over the crime scene, and the tiger cannot get rid of his stripes!

They wear this jacket, and can never get rid of it now!

They drove a Faustian bargain with the Devil!
