Top Story: Jon Stewart Is A Socialist

Recommended Posts

Alright so I subscribe to recieve newsletter emails from mediaite.com. The last few emails have all contained stories about Daily Show host Jon Stewart being a Socialist. First it was some guy that isn't worth looking up that said Jon told him this in a bar, then Jon's own words in a Larry King interview from way back when. So is Jon "The Cool Kid On The Block" Stewart (nickname is from my own head, I am not aware of anyone else actually calling him this)really a Socialist?!?!?! Or a better question, so freakin what if he is!!!!

Oh yeah, like a Socialist is the absolute worst thing you can be. It's now Satan, Adolph Hitler and Jon Stewart. They're all in the same club together. Give me a break. I hate to be the one to break it to you, but your beloved unregulated Capitalism hasn't exactly worked very well.

Personally I had never identified myself as a Socialist, but then I took many political personality quizes that have said I identified with forms of Socialism. To be honest I think we need a system that is a mixture of Socialism and heavily regulated Capitalism. What I do know is that this idea of completely unregulated, no holds barred Capitalism, like many Republicans would like to see, is the absolute worst idea for this country.

To get back to the main point, I don't know if Stewart really is a Socialist. I never saw this supposed Larry King interview (it could've been a joke people just didn't get...like most of mine) and I certainly don't trust something some dude said Jon told him in a bar. What I do know is this: If Jon is in fact a Socialist, I look at the crap that's gone on in the business world in this country and I completely see why.

Thoughts?

As a follow up I'd just like to mention that when Jon returned to The Daily Show (he was on vacation when the story first came out) he put the rumors to rest and said that he was not a socialist. Which was kinda obvious anyway. Good to have him and Colbert back on TV. Two weeks is too long to wait.

Unfortunately many people hear the word Socialism and immediatly think of Soviet style Communism. Although the two could not be further apart on the political spectrum they will forever be linked because of cold war propaganda spouted by both the Soviet Union AND the United States.

The Soviet claim that theirs was a model of perfect Socialist / Marxist ideology strained the very fabric of reality, while the claims of the American government that the Soviet Union was hell bent on world conquest through "godless Socialist / Marxist domination" further blurred the line separating Soviet style Socialism form true Socialism.

Captialists like Roger Ailes, the man who claims that Jon Stewert is a Socialist and ( surprise, surprise ) is the President of the Fox News Channel, have learned how to spin American cold war propaganda like a spider spins a web. They use cold war tactics of fear and conspiracy to control those who don't know any better.

They do this to protect what they have: money and power. Their whole world revolves around these two core ingredients, and they will do anything to preserve what they have, including the slander of others. Take the 99% movement for instance. As soon as it seemed that these folks who were protesting big money domination of the social and political outlook in this country were actually gaining national attention and approval, the Capitalist war machine kicked into high gear. Soon stories of debauchery and plans to overthrow Wall Street dominated the Fox News channel broadcasts, these people were described as hippies and malcontents, freeloaders and, of course, "Socialist deviants". Republican Mayors in cities across America took steps to shut the 99% protests in their own backyards down. Police departments treated these people as though they were a horrific threat. Soon they used typical reactionary tactics to contain the godless hordes, complete with riot squads, canine units, and pepper spray. Corporate owned news channels made certain that this movement was portrayed in the most unappealing way possible, flooding their broadcasts with images of drum circles and and pot smoking Anarchists. These people were portrayed as the enemies of Democracy.

So you see, Socialism is no more or less an evil than any other political ideology. It has simply been misrepresented by the power elite in this country. Those who fear that a more level playing field is somehow a threat to them. To characterize ones self as Socialist ahould not be something that is uttered in subdued voices in back rooms. Say it proudly. Remember, despite what the Capitialist / conservative elite would have you believe, there is STILL freedom of political expression in this country.

And just for the record, I am NOT a Communist or a Socialist. I simply believe that all people should be free to express themselves as they see fit, just as the Founding Fathers did.

Good points Scrutinizer! You say socialist, and they say, Ah hah, Anti-business or even more insanely, they suggest it's all about communism at its roots. We have all sorts of socialistic policies and have for years. Everyone likes them too. But, and this is the catch --- it's now accepted by popular notion, that these accepted policies should be described as entitlements. That neat little word entitlements, something we can't afford to ever pay for in the not too distant future. No it's not war, not new weapons, see because those things, even if we don't need them, employ some or create jobs or keep us secure. But isn't that a waste of resource in the end? When it comes down to it, what is resource? What about inequality, what is that? What in fact is the science of economics after all?

Well of course, liberals do understand how business works. Not all of them, but most do since they all work when they can just like all conservatives do.

And just about everyone, at least to some degree, or in the most modest sense of the word, is a libertarian by no stretch of the imagination that I can see.

There just isn't anything wrong at all wrong with the Golden Rule, even if you aren't religious. But it's obvious that you can't legislate the Golden Rule.

You can go back to Emerson, the idea of circles. Where Emerson describes progress always taking a similar circuitous route, then, suddenly, and for the briefest of moments, the obvious is more clear to more people. And then, just as easily as it at one point seems to have been realized, it abruptly begins to fade. The people are the same but something has changed. Meanwhile, there's all these really important things that need to be done, yet there's too many people out of work wasting away.

It's a pain in the arse. Stewart, just mocks the stalwart (news media) in the mix. We all do that. It's called comedy --- being too obvious while making fun of what people seem to accept as normal but actually don't, or like that's just OK. After a while you do get sick of politics don't you!!!

Peace!

"You see." I said, "I'm a socialist. I don't think this world was made for a small minority to dance on the faces of everyone else.."

Socialism is an economic system characterised by social ownership and/or control of the means of production and cooperative management of the economy,[1] and a political philosophy advocating such a system. "Social ownership" may refer to any one of, or a combination of, the following: cooperative enterprises, common ownership, direct public ownership or autonomous state enterprises.[2] There are many variations of socialism and as such there is no single definition encapsulating all of socialism.[3] They differ in the type of social ownership they advocate, the degree to which they rely on markets versus planning, how management is to be organised within economic enterprises, and the role of the state in constructing socialism.[4]
Wiki

In a nutshell Socialism requires that the state(made up of The People) controls the means of production of goods(factories) and produces goods not for profit but at a planned rate as the goods are required by the people.

Those who work the hardest receive the most goods. Those who work for government invariably see themselves as the hardest workesrs and so invariably allocate the best and most goods to themselves. That's where Socialism always falls apart. It's practically impossible to control corruption.

That being said.

I don't think many of us "left leaners" actually endorse state owned manufacturing facilities nor state controlled distribution of goods. Socialism/Marxism was to be the transitory phase between the bourgeoisie/aristocratic control of the economy to eventual "Communism" and ownership by the proletariat with the state serving as a benign administrator.

Once again corruption is impossible to control when the system is attempted in any pure form.

The most successful governments today (mostly Nordic/Scandinavian) are hybrid systems of capitalism/socialism. Taxes are high in these systems to support social programs like healthcare, education, and the provision of support for the infirm and elderly. Wages are also high, as is worker satisfaction, unemployment is low and they are still oriented towards Capitalism so while the disparity between the rich and poor is less, the means to acquire wealth still exists for entrepreneurs.

The US has attempted a pure, minimally regulated, system of Capitalism. It's working out about as well as minimally regulated Socialism or Communism would be expected to work out: Great for those at the top, not so great for the rest of us.

Is Jon Stewart a Socialist? No, but like most of us "Lefties" he supports a fair and equitable system which includes basic social programs and sufficient government revenue to fund them without deficit spending.

Yes, he was, actually- a Sermon On the Mount kind of guy. He played Davy Crockett in a teevee show. For those familiar with history, Davy Crockett had a very socialist political viewpoint. I think Johnny WANTED to play Davy.

The true Socialist is an idealist. The thought that mankind can share wealth or power equally is a fantasy. There will always be someone who thinks they, for whatever reason, deserve more. Or that others, for whatever reason, deserve less. Be they King, Emperor, Tyrant, Industrialist, Prophet, or 1%, they will always exist.

The best we can do is to keep a constant struggle for justice and equality. If this country somehow manages to survive the current right wing greed it now suffers from, perhaps there can be a rebirth of reason. They say history repeats itself. Just as the dark ages gave way to the renaissance, Perhaps the current right wing dark age will eventually give way to an age of enlightenment. We can only hope.

I know this one, this new chat thing. I've seen it called the "shoutbox" among other things in my past. Very hard to hide from the chat box. The question is asked, there's no time to go search what other folks think, this is real time. Only seconds should be between chat box replies. This one is made for me. In the chat box one has to be quick on their feet with stuff at the ready. This chat box is the worst nightmare of anyone trying to deal with ol' teach.
