This is a PA Dutch recipe. My grandmother made it regularly. Often with home or raw fries between slices of home made white bread & the gravy poured on top.

Breakfast Mackerel

  • 1 - salt mackerel
  • Water to cover
  • 1 - cup milk
  • 1/2 - cup cream
  • 1 - Tablespoon butter
  • Paprika

  1. Freshen the mackerel by soaking it overnight in water to cover with skin side up.
  2. In the morning steam in a skillet with 1-cup water, covered.
  3. When water boils, pour it off and add milk.
  4. Simmer a few minutes until cooked.
  5. Heat the cream, take the fish from the pan, place on hot platter, dot with butter, and pour cream over it.
  6. Sprinkle with paprika.
  7. Serve with whole, boiled potatoes.

I never much cared for the fish, but did eat it; what's unique is the flavor of the gravy with the bread & fried potatoes.

I usually double the ingredients; and use a large cast iron frying pan.

I had grilled mackerel at a Korean restaurant last night. Just amazing.

We also had a pork bulgogi and lots of veggies (kimchi and others). So much food that we had to take some home, so I had pork and mackerel for breaksfast. :)

I took some vacation, and it's nice to be home, but I have to go back to work on Thursday.

For so long, I wished for the day.
The day that our love would find its way.
From my heart and into your soul,
The feeling so strong, I had no control.
